Roger Ebert talks about how to read a movie. This all began for me in about 1969, when I started teaching a film class in the University of Chicago's Fine Arts program. I knew a Chicago film critic, teacher and booker named John West, who lived in a wondrous apartment filled with film prints, projectors, books, posters and stills. "You know how football coaches use a stop-action 16mm projector to study game films?" he asked ...

Politicians eager to keep up with the latest fad need more than a flag pin this election season; the hottest accessory of the 2008 campaign is the reversible raincoat. That's the nickname speechwriters have given to the rhetorical device in which words are repeated in transposed order, as with Churchill's famous line: "Let us preach what we practice—let us practice what we preach." The fancy Greek name for the trick is antimetabole, and it's been ...

We've been dogging the Coen Brothers' "Burn After Reading" for some time now assuming it was the worst kind of wild, screwball nonsense because of the trailers which we never really, but we can happily say we were wrong. It was neither the madcap silliness we thought it would be, nor was it too off-the-rails.Yeah, the film is full of chuckleheaded idiots, but that's the whole point and this dark comedy with thriller-like intrigue was, ...

Economist, Sept. 6The Economist focuses on Alaska with one piece on the role played by "windfall taxes" and earmarks in the state's economy and another on Mark Begich, the Anchorage mayor in a Senate race against scandal-plagued incumbent Ted Stevens. Since Gov. Sarah Palin increased taxes levied against oil companies, Alaskans are receiving $1,200 each this year, "ostensibly to cover the high cost of fuel." The "suddenly flush" state still puts a premium on securing ...

Presidential nominee John McCain had a big job to do yesterday evening at the close of the Republican National Convention. His surprise vice presidential pick, Sarah Palin, had delivered a zingy, fast-paced address the evening before. Comparisons to her speech would be inevitable, as they would be to the acceptance speech the week before of his Democratic rival, Barack Obama, an abundantly gifted speaker. But his challenges went beyond style. He needed to co-opt the ...

In an article on HuffPost, recent footage from The Daily Show is discussed:Wednesday night on "The Daily Show," Jon Stewart hit Karl Rove and Bill O'Reilly with damning evidence of their hypocrisy regarding Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin. While Rove recently praised Palin's experience as the mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, Stewart showed video of Rove trashing Virginia Governor — and former Richmond Mayor — Tim Kaine's executive experience, listing all the cities that are bigger ...

You’ve probably heard of Ubiquity by now. It was causing quite a buzz a few days ago before Google Chrome came along and stole all of its thunder. Ubiquity is an experimental Firefox extension that bills itself as “a powerful new way to interact with the web.” One way to describe Ubiquity that gives you a clearer idea of what it’s actually all about is that it’s Quicksilver for the Internet. We’re all used to ...

The latest Gallup tracking poll shows Sen. Barack Obama continues to hold a lead over Sen. John McCain, 49% to 42%. The results, so far, suggest the Republican convention has done little to dent Obama's national edge. However, the survey was mostly completed before Gov. Sarah Palin gave her speech last night.

Last week, Digg CEO Jay Adelson sat in a crowded room in Denver holding a stack of papers while facing a camera and trying to project his voice over the cacophony around him. Next to him sat a tired-looking U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who had taken a break from the Democratic National Convention to meet with Adelson. The two were participating in a new project launched by Digg in conjunction with CNN’s ...

Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin made history last night, as she addressed the RNC. In her speech, she (of the lifetime NRA membership) aimed barbed verbal ammunition at Barack Obama, though many reports indicated that she would not do so; so much for reciprocating his class-drenched gesture of reminding the press corps that he, too, was the child of a teen mother, and that they should back the muck off of Bristol Palin. I ...

Getting an interview with Mad Men star Jon Hamm last evening at the Best Life magazine party at Michael's was akin to getting an audience with the Pope, as his flacks fussed and hovered, and nearly ruined our “We met Don Draper!” moment. Even so, we managed to sneak in a few questions. (Yes, we know we just ran a Jon Hamm Q&A a month ago, but he's Don Draper!) What are you working on ...

ST. PAUL, Minn.--Over the next 60 days, I'm curious to see whether the McCain campaign will drastically restrict press access to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin--and, if so, whether that will make any difference with voters. I bring this up because Palin just took her first off-the-cuff question from a reporter since joining the Republican ticket last Friday. (She has spoken to People magazine about her family.) After McCain's running mate emerged from a private Republican ...

We were pretty psyched there to see the 'indie-rock comedy,' "Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist," starring the prince of awkwardness Michael Cera and the oh-so adorable Kat Dennings. The trailer made it look cute, charming, and winsome in a totally endearing way.And then we saw it and we were left disappointed, deflated and we moved on, but a belated review is in order since the film premiere's at TIFF this week. We're not sure what we ...

The speech Sarah Palin gives tonight at the Republican National Convention will, I predict, be wildly over-praised. It may even put to rest media speculation that Palin is unqualified for the vice-presidential nomination. How do I know this? Because Palin, who remains largely an unknown quantity, is getting beaten up in the press for various trivial shortcomings. Her teenage daughter is pregnant. (What's that got to do with Palin's qualifications to be vice president?) She ...

It didn't take long for the hype machine to gear up. Seemingly minutes after news began to appear about Google's new Web browser (called "Chrome"), pundits started talking about "browser wars" and Google's "Microsoft killer." In this case, the hype might be justified, if Chrome delivers on its disruptive potential. Early descriptions sound ominous for Microsoft. Google's browser was built from the ground up to make it easier and faster to run Web-based applications. It ...

Equally compelling, although a little less obvious, are finding ways to improve the customers' experience by taking away something that they find negative -- irritating, inconvenient, painful, or even worse, scary and disgusting.Over time, those things that customers once tolerated and ...
