I'm not sure why you would do this but a programmer in Norway has developed a dual-boot method for the iPhone providing Windows Mobile support. In this video found by MobileDevicesToday the programmer shows selecting Windows Mobile from the touch boot menu, and then running it. He claims it can make calls and I must admit it looks pretty cool to see Windows Mobile running on a nice capacitive touch screen. He says it will ...

Weather BETA Version 1 ... version one? Don’t you understand the Web’s key feature of continual upgrades? Why so many PRINT buttons? Non-open Flash crap tastic. You should have used open Web standards like Javascript to achieve the same thing. No BBC weather API. I want to embed a Weather report onto a Web page, like a map. When I put in my post code it tells me I’m in Bracknell. I’m not in bloody ...

Today I have been working on the project I mentioned a few weeks back, to collect, store and graph data sent from my current cost unit. If you have been following this blog, you will know that I plan to make the service available to anyone, for free, so that they can do the same. As I intend to release this service to the community in the coming months, I realised I couldn't keep referring ...

We live in a time of amazing technology. The advances that have been made in the last 20 years are positively astounding. As computers have gotten smaller and merged with our phones, issues have started to pop up regarding form factors and interfacing with the device. Various permutations of hardware have manifested themselves in Windows Mobile devices. Touchscreen and non-touchscreen; qwerty keyboards, standard dial pads and devices without any hardware keyboard at all have been ...

Faber Nitor have released a solution for Windows Mobile that if you have your phone stolen it will automatically send you the thief’s mobile phone number and SIM card ID when they try and use the phone with their SIM card! It does this by automatically recognising that an authorised SIM has been placed in the device and it then sends the information to an alternative mobile phone number you place in the application. You ...

Evernote, the multiplatform note-taking app that I can't stop raving about, is opening up. New PC and Mac clients will get additional HTML import and export capabilities as well as accessibility from scripting tools like AppleScript. The Web service (which synchronizes data with the PC and Mac clients) will get an application programming interface. CEO Phil Libin is of course eager to see what developers do with the all-access API to the service. He's hoping ...

A few weeks ago thanks to Jamie I became thoroughly engrossed in Desktop Tower Defence (highscores here) and now thanks to Dean I'm consumed by Fantastic Contraption. Fantastic Contraption is Flash game with a nifty physics engine where the goal is to get the red shape into the red area shown on screen. To complicate matters, you have a limited selection of parts from which to build your contraption and you can only build it ...

Last weekend, and for the first half of this week, I’ve had to endure the security arrangements for the Labour Party annual conference, which took place just next door at Manchester Central (formerly known as the GMEX). This first affected us a couple of months ago, when just after moving in we got a letter from the police asking us to ring them up so that they could send a policeman round to take our ...

If you want to give to a good cause but don’t trust charities to spend your money well, there is now a solution: GlobalGiving. This website, which launched in the UK last week, lets you give direct to projects in poor countries around the world. And I think it’s brilliant. GlobalGiving does what most charities are extremely reluctant to do: it gives donors the power to pick their favourite projects from its website, and support ...

It's been about a week since I got to kick off Google Developer Day at Wembley, so I've had some time (and an 11 hour flight home) to reflect on the day. With the bright colors, technical sessions, and life-sized Connect Four behind us, the thing I'm still struck by is the feeling of community that permeated the day. The momentum has continued in Paris and Munich, and Madrid's event just getting started as I ...

Why oh why didn't I install Ubuntu 8.04 on my MSI Wind instead of OS X? If I had, I could have followed these lengthy, but reasonably simple, instructions to install the Android SDK on Ubuntu! Actually I see that the Android SDK can be installed on OS X 10.4.8 and up or Windows XP / Vista so once I find the time, I can still play. And I do mean play since the Android ...

Sorry, John. If you're one of those people who tries to grab his or her own preferred username on every new service that comes along, just in case the service becomes hot one day and you want to start using that cool ID, check out this new tool: Usernamecheck. All it does is ask you for a user name, and then pings about 45 services so it can return to you "taken" or "available" for ...

Spåren förskräcker ... eller nå´tIf a name is taken, it can't tell you if the owner of it is you or someone else (how would it know?), and there's as yet no way to add new sites for it to check--you have to wait for the developer to add them. Also, it's slow. And it doesn't appear to work on anything but Firefox. But this is a useful tool for managing one's personal brand. And here's a tip for parents-to-be: Run your baby names through it, as well as through BustAName. Your kid might thank you.

I’m ready to give up on the mobile tech market, I really am. We found out a few weeks ago that Palm OS Nova, the next generation OS that was supposed to put Palm back in the game, has been delayed. We’ll be lucky to see the OS now by summer 09, which means no devices until the holiday season at best, more than a year from now. Today we learned that Windows Mobile 7 ...

At Google, we develop products that we love to use ourselves. For example, we're avid users of Search, Gmail, Maps, and many others. But for those of us in mobile, it's tough. Not all products work the same on all devices, and although we try and optimize for each device, we often run into challenges specific to certain mobile phone platforms. I, for one, used to carry three devices with me all day. I love ...

What is a BarCamp? Wikipedia’s description is “BarCamp is an international network of user generated conferences — open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants — often focusing on early-stage web applications, and related open source technologies, social protocols, and open data formats.” Got your head around that one? Yeah, it’s a bit dry. This post should demystify a little what happens at a BarCamp event, and what you can get out of spending ...

I confess: I stopped watching the Emmys. It was shortly after Tina Fey won (yay!) and some idiot announced that I should “love TV and fear the Internet.” But honestly, I’d been offended for quite a while before Sonnenfeld’s crack. And my other confession is that I love television, particularly the crappy reality type, and the shows that are constantly overlooked and undervalued by the Emmys and the ratings types, like “Buffy” and “Arrested Development” ...

Now that the Zune 120 is out, I found myself with an extra Zune 8. So I decided to put the old Zune to some good use...in my bathroom. You see, I've always wanted a way to catch up on the news while I shower in the morning. But shower FM radios just never seemed techie enough, and besides I don't like listening to radio commercials early in the morning. I needed a way to ...
