BackType is the newest YCombinator startup to launch from their summer program. They’re a blog-comment focused startup - founders Christoper Golda and Michael Montano are for the first time aggregating all comments from millions of blogs into a single, searchable, parsable stream. Think Twitter for all comments on the web. They are not like the recent barrage of startups focusing on cleaning up the comment experience on blogs - see Disqus, SezWho, JS-Kit, etc. Blogs ...

Matt Welch has an excellent little reason article putting John McCain’s heated Georgia rhetoric in the context of McCain’s larger record of overreacting to every international event. He wasn’t just worried by North Korea’s nuclear program in 1994, he called it “the most dangerous and immediate expression” of “the greatest challenge to U.S. security and world stability today.” He didn’t just favor military action over Kosovo, he wanted “infantry and armored divisions for a possible ...

FlickrFan, like all rivers of news, is about flow. In this case it's a flow of pictures, from your contacts on Flickr, from AP and AFP, and from anyone else that you know that provides a feed of high-def pictures. I like to view the pictures on a big-screen TV that's hooked up to a Mac Mini, but I also use it on my desktop, and various laptops -- no matter where or how you ...

OK, the book is done. And let me tell you the minutia that went into image selection is even beyond my usual ocd. Oh, way, way beyond. The image selection ended up being a great surprise to me in many ways, with images that best pair together and take into account what I've seen in the last few years about America. There's a few images that I haven't really shown before, although I think all ...

In a Swiss experiment, two entangled photons 18 km away from each other were able to communicate with each other almost instantaneously. On the basis of their measurements, the team concluded that if the photons had communicated, they must have done so at least 100,000 times faster than the speed of light -- something nearly all physicists thought would be impossible. In other words, these photons cannot know about each other through any sort of ...

One of the researchers, Nicholas Gisin, notes these events "seem to happen from outside space-time, in that it's not a story you can tell within space-time" and that "what's fascinating here is that we see that nature is able to produce events that can manifest themselves at several locations." The Nature article is behind a paywall, but other articles include slightly more information. e.g. http://www.livescience.com/strangenews/080813-spooky-limit.html

A lot of you have probably seen this video. It's an amateur/independent pro-Obama, anti-McCain ad. There are a few elements -- tonal stuff -- that would have to be changed for a campaign to run something like this. But it's very good. The makings of a killer ad ...

Some movies Rex didn't realize you could watch in their entirety (for free and in 480p) on Hulu: Metropolitan, The Fifth Element, 28 Days Later, Requiem for a Dream, Lost in Translation, Koyaanisqatsi, and Eternal Sunshine. Me either! Also available are Raising Arizona, Lost Highway, Hoop Dreams, Sideways, Master and Commander, Ghostbusters, The Karate Kid, and Groundhog Day. (link)

“A giant inflatable dog turd by American artist Paul McCarthy blew away from an exhibition in the garden of a Swiss museum, bringing down a power line and breaking a greenhouse window before it landed again, the museum said Monday. The art work, titled “Complex S(expletive..)”, is the size of a house. The wind carried it 200 metres (yards) from the Paul Klee Centre in Berne before it fell back to Earth in the grounds ...

Jersey girls, rejoice. Joining the ranks of classic rock legends like the Stones, Petty, and Prince, Bruce Springsteen may be the entertainment at this season's Super Bowl halftime show. I've never been a fan, but I'm probably in the minority of Philadelphians in that regard. Either way, it's good to see the NFL continue the trend of actually booking acts people want to see, rather than cramming as many pop stars onto one stage as ...

Via Political Wire, it appears that McCain's vast policy experience and knowledge of international affairs is derived from wikipedia: A Wikipedia editor notices some similarities between Sen. John McCain's speech today on the crisis in Georgia and the Wikipedia article on the country Georgia. They appear similar enough that most people would consider parts of McCain's speech to be derived directly from Wikipedia. First instance: one of the first countries in the world to adopt ...
