Symbian on Tuesday released its second quarter financial data. The Nokia-owned company said that it bested last year’s sales mark with 19.6 million units sold. That may seem high, but over the past six months, 159 different Symbian OS-based mobile devices hit store shelves, compared to just a handful from RIM and one from Apple. The most glaring element of Symbian’s release was that it only grew 5 percent over the past year. Considering mobile ...

Is it time to revise the old saw that everyone in the world is connected by just six degrees of separation? A study from French mobile carrier O2 has found that strangers are more connected to each other than they ever have been. According to the study, the average person is now connected by just three degrees within a shared “interest” or social group instead of six. In fact, it found that people are usually ...

Google announced their browser Google Chrome to be available on Tuesday, but their download page and tour was already partly available at gears.google.com/chrome/ just now, as Uval in the forum noticed. While the download itself didn’t work when I tried, I was able to extract some screenshots, from the frontpage but also the YouTube videos. And while the product tour videos themselves seemed to require a special group membership at YouTube, the video still previews ...

There had been a lot of speculation on this for a long time, but it looks like it's true after all. I kind of have my doubts as to how well Google might do with it. Gaining browser market share is not an easy thing and forget about monetization. I don't know that anyone has ever even really made any direct or remotely indirect money with developing a browser.

Just when we thought the damn things were dead and buried, I ran across another Flash intro screen the other day. And like practically every other one I've seen, it was half useless puffery about the organization behind the site, and half lookit-this-kewl-effect self-indulgence by the designer. But they can't all be bad... can they? Has anybody seen a Flash intro that doesn't have you scanning the screen desperately for the "skip intro" link?

*nods* flash intro's - not a good idea (at least not ones that play automatically on your main page - wait for people to ask for it to be played if you do need one)

fuggly...the appeal to developers and to enterprises will have a significant impact on Android's ability to succeed. But I still have a hard time seeing Android's phones displacing Apple in the consumer space. Apple has some work to do in terms of scaling it's developer community and maintaining application quality, but it's lead is comfortable and I expect many of the issues to be resolved. If I'm Nokia and Motorola, however, I'm sweating bullets...

There’s an analysis report issued by eMarketer looking at the space of time between 2008 and 2012 that takes an educated guess as to what business-to-business marketing spending will look like in four years’ time in the US on social networks specifically. Its research estimates a total of $40 billion in the US this year. In 2012, meanwhile, it predicts more than 500% increase to $210 million. That may be so. And of course there ...
