In an incredibly unifying and symbolic moment during the New York state delegate roll call, Senator Hillary Clinton asks for a suspension of the vote and requests the nomination of Barack Obama by acclamation. (Bumped -- kos) The more I read stuff like this (from Stephanopolous on Good Morning America Weekend Sunday), the more comfortable I am with Biden's selection. I have never seen a vice-presidential candidate, in the announcement, come out with THAT KIND of ferocity. Usually, you see it a little bit later in the campaign – not at the announcement. But Joe Biden showed one of the main reasons that Barack Obama picked him. They WANTED ...

Barack Obama and Joseph R. Biden Jr. in Springfield, Ill. (Photo: Jeff Roberson/Associated Press) When Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race after a poor showing in Iowa early this year I was depressed, but not surprised. I met Biden, seeing him speak on campus, in a very small room at Plymouth State University during the primary campaigning. I saw all the Democrats (and several Republicans) running, but by far Joe was the guy ...

I like the Biden choice as VP for a number of reasons, most of which have been elucidated elsewhere. Obama's choice, to me, shows something he has demonstrated over and over: his understanding that the past always informs the future, even if critically and even if that future needs dearly to break with the bad habits of the past. This often tragic feature of the human condition is the main core truth shared by thoughtful ...

Yeah, the racism thing has got to go. Racial enlightenment would be one of the excellent side-effects of Obama getting elected. PUMAs may not be racist in the sheet-wearing/cross-burning sense of the word, but they are *by definition* racist in the post-modern, post-colonialist sense.

Teh stoopid, it hurts. By all measures, Martin Luther King Jr. was a true leader. Barack Obama, on the other hand, is just another politician - one who has demonstrated far more regard for the interests of teacher unions than for the children they are paid to serve, far more regard for the pro-abortion lobby than for the future of the black community, and far less good sense than the average person has when it ...

PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- When it comes to marking up historic signs, good grammar is a bad defense. Jeff Deck and Benjamin Herson corrected the grammar in the first paragraph of this sign. Two self-styled vigilantes against typos who defaced a more than 60-year-old, hand-painted sign at Grand Canyon National Park were sentenced to probation and banned from national parks for a year. Jeff Deck and Benjamin Herson pleaded guilty August 11 for the damage ...

Last November, as the front-runner for the Democratic nomination, Hillary Clinton said that she'd be happy to have Joe Biden as her running mate. I would consider Joe Biden for anything," Clinton said. "He's a friend of mine, he's a wonderful senator. I'm one of Joe's biggest fans." Today Clinton praised Barack Obama's VP choice, saying Biden is "an exceptionally strong, experienced leader and devoted public servant". If there's any sense at all in political ...

While, thanks to the recent CDC report documenting the resurgence of measles in the U.S., thanks to worrisome pockets of decreasing vaccine uptake that could portend a much wider resurgence if the antivaccine brigade, now led by Jenny McCarthy, has its way, I'm back on the topic of vaccines after having amazingly managed to stay away for an uncharacteristically long time, I thought that one last post for a while (I hope) is in order. ...

by publius Biden it is. Personally, I’m pretty psyched — I’ve always liked Biden. But I also think it’s a strong political choice, despite all the potential criticisms. The first criticism — echoed already by the great visionary Ron Fournier — is that Obama’s pick shows a lack of “self-confidence.” Another way of looking at it is that Obama had the guts to endure these types of criticisms to put someone on the ticket who ...

They look good together, and Biden looks like he is having the time of his life. I sort of ignored all the babble about the happy warrior last night, but there really might be something to it. they look good together. The other thing is that Biden is a good enough of a speaker that he doesn’t seem completely over-shadowed after hearing Obama. I doubt Kaine and others could have accomplished that. And I really ...

Cell phones around the country greeted their owners this morning with text messages proclaiming that Barack Obama had chosen Joe Biden as his Vice-Presidential nominee. An interesting pick; I would have been more excited by Kathleen Sebelius or Wesley Clark, but I can live with it. The things you need to know about Joe Biden are: (1) He has been a Senator forever (half of his life). (2) He is a smart guy, not a ...

Lots of good reaction to the Biden pick from our diaries. Hope Reborn rounds up all the positive reaction to the pick, and there's plenty of it. dcprof makes some excellent points about how Biden crimps McCain's VP options. Romney was already problematic because of house?-gate. Choosing Biden, from working class roots and at the bottom of senatorial wealth, emphasizes that. If Romney's the pick, it's all the easier to do the "out of touch" ...

Through the wee hours as the news of Obama's VP leaked, on air guests asked -- some in thinly veiled accusatory tones -- why wait five whole days, til the very last second like this? Well, elementary rule of politics: don't interfere when your opponent is busy hanging himself. The McCain campaign has been dancing like a cattle rustler wearing their own custom made noose for the last several days. Susan G blogged on the ...

I wrote a a month ago: we really, really don't want to pick someone who plugs a supposed gap in Obama's armor. You pick Wes Clark, and people won't see "phew, national security is covered!". Nope, they'll see, "Obama is trying to compensate for his lack of national security creds!" And whether it's Sam Nunn, or Joe Biden, or anyone else who supposedly patches up a weakness, the end result would be what Gore had ...
