Demos below! As a sort-of reverse birthday present I've decided to release one of my largest projects, in recent memory. This is the project that I've been alluding to for quite some time now: I've ported the Processing visualization language to JavaScript, using the Canvas element. I've been working on this project, off-and-on now, for the past 7 months - it's been a fun, and quite rewarding, challenge. The full scope of the project can ...

I have been thinking a lot about a good and scalable development setup for small teams. That means, as team size grows, things don't have to be changed. Server machine(s):- Subversion ServerApache HTTPDTracMail ServerMySql ServerActiveDirectory/LDAP I am planning to have all of these one server machine (IBM) in virtualized environment. Subversion and Trac can go in one VM, perhaps under Apache. Second VM can have Apache for web-apps, third VM can have mysql, fourth VM can ...

We get asked frequently about integration of some Zoho service or another with a third party service, often with that of a competitor. As one recent example, see this thread on Zoho CRM integration with GMail/GTalk. The question often is “Is Zoho all or nothing? If we like and use one Zoho service, would we be forced to use all of them as a bundle?” The categorical answer is “No, Zoho is not an all ...

Dear Scoble, We happened to see this post of yours. We agree that Israel is far from the US. But India unfortunately is on the other side of the US and literally not many bloggers really care about the startup ecosystem over here. The number of VCs investing are just handful and the number of investors really taking risks by investing in early stage startups is meagre. How about a trip to India to meet ...

You never know when your brain is going to flash on an idea, a great gift, or something you need from the store. That’s why I carry a small notebook around with me most of the time. Here are some productivity tips on how to use a “hipster PDA” effectively. Get one. I got mine for about a buck at Office Depot. It looks like this: Write the date on the outside of the notebook. ...

This weekend I gave two talks at BarCamp Rochester (which was very well put together and quite enjoyable) - one on jQuery and a very quick one on the Processing language. I've deconstructed my slides into some bullet points here. If you're not familiar with the language, or what it's capable of, this should give you a good overview. Processing is a data visualization programming language. It has three components: The Processing language The Processing ...

Online advertising is steadily robbing the market share from traditional media advertising. Given the potential of growth and increasing Internet penetration in India, online advertising is set to explode in coming years. The 38.5 million Indian Internet users, according to an IAMAI study, have become the prime target for numerous advertisers clouding the web. To cash in on this growth, number of online ad networks have come up in India in last few years. Here ...

It's no secret that I've always been an ardent admirer of companies that invest in impressive internal tools, developer resources, and internal things that make your developers go mmmh! Perhaps thats the secret to how they manage to release public api's and platforms for developers quickly in their product life cycle than companies with more mature products, but spend more time and effort trying to open up API's even for internal use in a plug-n-play, easy ...

Update: This was part of an April Fool’s Day joke. I did this post so that people might believe my other jokes on April Fool’s. I’ve decided to skip April Fool’s Day this year, and I’ll tell you why: I’m April Fools’ed out. I’ve done a bunch of April Fools jokes in the past, and this year I’m just too tired to do it. Plus I’m worried that if I escalate the jokes much further, ...

I am lately meeting a lot of early stage startup founders looking for access to capital, and not much that would involve a typical VC Firm. Most of the time, the need is to build the prototype, ramp up the team and figure out the business model - which is quite early to turn to conventional investors. I thought I’d collate some of the info that I am aware of to help this lot.If you ...

So for once, I'm glad there was a traffic jam. I spoke to Shriram briefly about his exit ...

Venture capitalists have a hard job. The good ones have to pick a small number of investments from a large pool of opportunities, often with minimal "data". If I were a VC, I'd look at a lot of the things that VCs look at today and ask some of the same questions. What's the market opportunity? Who's on the team? What do you think your sustainable competitive advantage is, or will be? In addition to ...

I spent a lot of my weekend moving my website from Dreamhost to Slicehost. Slicehost is a VPS provider with a platform based on Xen. This was not really due to any problem with Dreamhost (they're really good and I would recommend them instantly) but more due to how good Slicehost was. In fact, I have to say that Slicehost, at this early stage, is by far the best host I've worked with. Shared hosts ...

This is the third in a series of four blog posts. Read parts one and two, to get some context Dr Douglas Lauffenberger's (from MIT's Biological Engineering Dept) talk (warning - mp3) provided enough ideas for a (sufficient for my purposes) working definition of "engineering". (paraphrase begins) Dr Lauffenberger begins by breaking down engineering into two aspects - science ( the study of things that exist ) and technology ( making things that don't exist). ...

In my conversations with many entrepreneurs during the events at Proto.in and Headstart.in, I have observed few things that I want to discuss here. Should startups get disappointed if they do not get invested? One top name investment banker once told me, ‘you are not an exception (referring to our state of not getting funded by a VC). Instead, you are the norm’. He added, ‘Silicon Valley (and few other areas, such as Boston) is ...
