The NetGear Digital Entertainer Elite network has been spotted at the FCC. This media streaming device is going to launch in the near future and it is truly next-gen. It can decode all sorts of high-definition files, which is most certainly impressive. For instance, it can decode XviD, AVI, DivX or H.264 codecs. It also has support for a 3.5-inch SATA internal dark disk drive. The Wi-Fi module is a nice bonus, as well. It ...

Over at Boing Boing, Cory has posted his fiction picks today. A fair number of them are available as e-books, so if you don’t mind the DRM you might want to go and see what he is suggesting. I added Charles Stross’s Halting State and Saturn’s Children and Neal Stephenson’s Interface to my Kindle, based on his recommendation. His choices contain a number of young adult books and his previous picks for kids are available ...

So, get a load of this. While tinkering within the iPhone 2.2 SDK, ArsTechnica discovered a neat little tidbit that could lead to some pretty extensible applications. In essence, the MPTVOutWindow class enables your iPhone to beam out video to a connected TV rather than the built-in screen. Of course, dock-connecting iPods / iPhones have been sending out videos for ages now, but this could actually enable applications to be used on the big screen. ...

Right on time for Thanksgiving day, µTorrent - client of choice for many BitTorrent users - has released a Mac version in beta, after a rudimentary alpha release was leaked a couple of months ago (on a BitTorrent tracker, at that). The lightweight µTorrent client for Windows was first publicly released in September 2005, and was acquired by BitTorrent in 2006, who continued development on the application and promised to release a Mac version. It ...

Don’t know about you, but I love netbooks and Dell Inspiron Mini 9 is my personal favorite. It has a solid battery (4 cells) and could be ordered with Ubuntu — yes I want Linux on my netbook as I needed it almost solely for writing. However, what I don’t like about Linux is a lack of drivers for 3G cards and that may be the only reason why I’m willing to jump to Windows ...

Sesame Workshop Once upon a time, before he became a brilliant movie actor with an Oscar and dozens of films under his belt, Morgan Freeman was known to a generation of children as the Easy Reader, Count Dracula, and hosts of other characters on The Electric Company. From 1971-77, The Electric Company was a sort of hip older step-cousin to Sesame Street, and it helped teach a lot of kids how to read, or how ...

SOUTHWOOD, England - In the final part of our series on testing (though we still have analysis to do) we take a look at stress tests. I tend to keep my phone in my front left pocket. That way I always know where it is (alongside my keys) and if I don't feel it there, I know it's missing so I naturally look for it. Some people though, keep it in their back pockets. I'm ...

Twitter was offered $500 million from Facebook as reported by Kara Swisher (who has an accurate reporting record). Let me get this on the record: I love Twitter. From the day that my friend Dan Bricklin showed me Pyra I’ve been watching Ev and his team at Pyra, Odeo, and then Twitter I have been a big fan of those product guys. Twitter has been a ‘whale of a hit’. I remember when I started ...
