Over at the Make blog, Marc de Vinck has a charming video that shows you how to do a simple Arduino project. Arduino is a tool for making computers that can sense and control more of the physical world than your desktop computer. It's an open-source physical computing platform based on a simple microcontroller board, and a development environment for writing software for the board. Arduino is open source! In addition to the genuine Arduino, ...

Christmas is coming up pretty quickly. [tinkernut] shows us how to do a quick and dirty music activated Christmas light setup. Simply crack open a pair of old computer speakers and wire the speaker leads to a relay. Use that to power an outlet and you have music controlled lights. The section at the beginning of the video is a bit misleading as that kind of choreography would be rather difficult with this setup. This ...

How sez, "California hipster artist Shag has created 13 new art pieces commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion attraction. I've collected all the details (and art) known to date about the upcoming event in August of 2009 in one post." What's not to like? Shag's art + the best ride Disney's Imagineers ever built = sheer heaven! Details are still a little sketchy (pardon the pun) at this time, but it appears that ...

In this short but riveting video, YouTube's Pfcthiel demonstrates a chainsaw "bayonet" he mounted on an assault rifle (he'll make you one for $300). As Neatorama points out, this may just be the world's greatest anti-zombie weapon. Also handy for loggers who fear attack-squirrels. Chainsaw Bayonet (via Neatorama)

THE ILLUSION OF LIFEI remember a lot of excitement building up in anticipation of the release of "The Illusion Of Life" a book that was going to reveal all the secrets of how to animate, written by 2 of Disney's "9 Old Men" -Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. When it finally came out, I snapped one up and read it in a couple of nights. It turned out not exactly to be what it was hyped ...

Milt Kahl?I'm surprised that "solid drawing" is so far down the list of principles in "The Illusion Of Life". It's #11 of 12 principles. To me, it's by far the most important tool of any artist, including animators. Without good strong drawings to move what do you have? Squash and stretch, overlapping action, secondary actions are all accessories; not the main course. They are animation

Tis the season to be luminously spankylighty all over the world. Xmas lights are my favorite thing about the holidays. Heck, last year I even bought —and reviewed—a Philips Livingcolors Lamp to illuminate our tree with multicolor goodness, much to Addy's glowing desperation. But hey, I can't help but to get all teary with all this heartwarming twinkling stars. In Tokyo, however, they go from sparkling lights to sensory overloading LED mayhem, like these photos ...

It hasn't even been two months since Microsoft loosed its Surface SDK, and already we're seeing new and improved (or is it just one or the other?) uses of the giant multitouch display. In a presumed attempt to keep savvy shoppers off of those message boards and in the dealership, BMW has developed a promotional video showcasing the so-called Product Navigator. Said device reminds us an awful lot of that fictional computer seen the recent ...

Bath bombs, for the unfamiliar, are chalky feeling balls about the size of a small orange that you throw into a bath tub. They don't explode but they do react with the water fizzing and spinning, filling the water with fragrance and moisturizers. Bath bombs are a project ripe for DIYing, they often run $6 or higher at stores. SoapyHollow, a contributor at the DIYer blog Instructables has a top rated guide on how to ...
