What to do about Detroit (126)

Seth's Blog (41) permalink
I was in Detroit last week... I have family there. I also drive a car. And I would rather that the world doesn't melt and the economy thrive. So I'm uniquely qualified to weigh in on the automobile industry. Not only should Congress encourage/facilitate the organized bankruptcy of the Big Three, but it should also make it easy for them to be replaced by 500 new car companies. Or perhaps a thousand. That's how many ...Shared by Adam (0) adang001 (0) adi (0) Alex Frantz (0) Allen Fuller (0) Ally (0) Andrew Boardman (2) Andy (0) Benjamin Thompson (0) Bigtravman (3) Bill Trammel (2) Bob Goyetche (0) Bob Hazlett (0) Brandon (0) Brent the Closet Geek (9) Carl Fyffe (2) Carlos Buitelaar (0) Chad (3) Chandoo (0) Charles (0) charlie ellis (0) Chris (0) Chris Papadopoulos (0) codefin (2) Crutis (2) D-Arb (0) Dan Bencsik (2) Dan The Plumber Conover (5) Darren (0) Dave Saunders (2) David (10) Davis (4) Dominik (4) Donnie Berkholz (3) Doug (0) Doug Williams (1) Dr. Ernie (0) eflorida (0) Eric (0) Eric Barroca (1) ferderig (4) Fleep Tuque (0) glongman (4) Greg (2) Hutch (0) iAdramelk (2) Jack Humphrey (0) Jared (3) Jason (0) Jason David Pelker (0) Jason Dettbarn (0) Jason Runyan (0) Jay (5) Jbud1 (0) Jeff (47) Jeff (0) Jeff (0) jeffreylandon (0) Jim Ierley (0) JMO (0) Joe LeBlanc (0) Johannes (0) John W. - Bob Hazlett said: I agree with Seth. The government shouldn't be there to bail out the big boys, but rather they should break down the barriers to entry and let the free market take over. Maybe then we'd see some true innovation come out of Detroit or even North Dakota for that matter.
- Philip Morgan said: I love this idea!
- Dan The Plumber Conover said: This is the opposite of Dave Winer's position (letting the auto industry fail courts it being bought up by foreign investors at a discount), and unfortuntely for me, I find both arguments persuasive.
- Dan Bencsik said: awesome idea!
- Davis said: Good argument.
- Carl Fyffe said: I totally agree. Let the big three die. Let the banks die too while you are at it. Life will be like the old west for a while.
- Dave Saunders said: Darn right Seth! Why support companies that continue to make products the public doesn't want? These CEO's, and the Union leaders, should all get copies of Tribes.
- glongman said: very cool
- Mark Dykeman said: This is an interesting, possibly healthy idea, but I think Seth has presented this without acknowledging a number of the key difficulties in large scale and heavy equipment manufacturing and distribution. Still, I think it would be worth some time for someone to seriously think through his idea in the hopes of finding something better. While Seth acknowledges the importance of the supplier chain, I think he seems to overlook the number of displaced employees of the Big Three itself and the dealership system if these bankruptcies go through - perhaps that is inevitable, though. Is the airline/air travel industry next, Seth?
- Jbud1 said: This is how you fix the US Auto-industry cash burning issue.
- Carlos Buitelaar said: One of the most compelling arguments
- Nick said: It's tough to not share all these articles, but this is one issue I'm very passionate about. Right on again.
- Lorenz Lammens said: Interesting post. Seth is all for letting the big 3 car manufacturers go down and have them replaced by hundreds of small manufacturers driving innovation, as happened in the early 20th century. Problem is, we live in a different financial age (global age) and we would need to see some complex partnerships to keep driving innovation (which these days is incredibly expensive compared to the early 20th century. For starters, we have a lot more expensive R&D that inevitably will fail - such is the nature of complex innovation.) I do admit that the big 3's business models are that of status quo and complacency, providing products for short term demands while ignoring long term realities. These guys were morons and even when asking for a bail out plan they still haven't presented us with a long-term plan of how we will regain ground on Japan and drive innovation once more.
- Logan said: I'm on board with this idea. Even specifically with Jeep, I feel they went to shit when they started making Chrysler SUV's with jeep logos.

DC Metro Police Searches Discourage Riders, Not Terrorists (20)

Washington, DC’s Metro system recently enacted a random police search policy for its riders, citing increased security concerns for the decision. But in reality, the new policy does nothing to protect people from terrorist attacks and pushes people away from public transit and into cars. Which is the bigger threat: a terrorist attack on a train or the greenhouse gases that spew from cars stuck in rush hour traffic?
