Not in school today, on a train instead, as I have to get a new Visa and my company has decided that it would be better for me to take a day's holiday and make the 8-hour round trip to Mito myself, rather than send their visa person to do it, despite the fact that she is already in Mito.Lunch is Thanksgiving leftovers butty (turkey, paxo, mash) a soyjoy bar, satsuma (mikan in Japanese) and ...

Friday is Noodle Day. This week is curry noodles, but not my favourite curry noodles. There is a better, thicker curry soup sometimes.Today we got a slice of apple in a plastic wrapper, which seemed like a waste, whole apples are better. The weird think that looks a bit like purple dog poo in this picture is actually a sweet potato, it may or may not be related to Thanksgiving. We also had shumai, the Chinese ...

As soon as I tried Keyboardr today, I was impressed. It’s a crazy fast and minimalist mashup of Google Search, which lets you search over multiple sources and navigate the results by using your arrow keys only. Results come out as soon as you type and you can get them from Google Search, Google Blogs, Youtube, Wikipedia and Google images. Then, you can just use your arrow keys to jump from a result to another ...

Ate with the kids today. One of them introduced her friend as "Pan-Pan Man". Not sure what that was about.Food was good, standard rice and milk, I left half my rice and all my milk. There was oden, I stand alone among the Doai ALTs in support of it, it's a salty broth with stuff floating in that you eat. Yummo.Salad was good, but star of the show was the meat, curry and lotus root ...

Today I have decided to start eating with the kids again. The teachers' dining room is driving me nuts. All the teachers assemble, wait ten minutes with their food in front of them while the last teacher meanders into the room. Once the highest-ranking member of the troop declares it is feeding time with his call of "itadakimasu", everyone tucks into their cold slop. The same ritual is repeated at the end of the meal, ...

A mid-level offering. Veg was OK, nothing special. Soup was miso with carrots, seaweed and tofu in it. Even the stars of the show, fried chicken and peanut blob, fail to raise the dish above mediocrity.3.5

It's great being a shambles. Just peachy. Rather than gliding through a staid, predictable life full of contentment and friendship, you lurch from one crisis point to the next, constantly challenged by your own ineptitude. One day I'm going to write a 24-style thriller in which the main character is under constant threat, not from terrorism, but himself. A typical episode would open with him being woken from oversleeping by having his house repossessed because ...

Life magazine have recently put their entire photo archive on Google Images and the Too Many Interests blog has picked out some of the most surprising psychology images. The image on the right is my favourite, and probably results from psychologists trying to answer the question 'how many babies does it take to change a lightbulb?' The answer is, of course, just one, but as long as the baby has the appropriate scaffolding. Yes, I'm ...

According to media reports there are two suspects in the dock: the rocket scientists' (a.k.a. the financial mathematicians) who provided the information behind the market's decisions, or the greedy bankers who only thought about quick profits and their end-of-year bonuses. We talk to David Hand, Chris Rogers and John Coates to find out who is guilty. This podcast accompanies the article Is maths to blame?

Here we are, nearing the end of November and, what with yesterday being my birthday - WOO- HOO! - I’m now officially working towards getting Mobile Geeks of London V out of the way next week so I can myself off for a well-deserved three day break. I told you before about all the stuff going on this month right? Well, as a result, I’ve now got SO much stuff to blog… it’s quite insane. ...

So, last weekend, I bought myself a new toy. I got myself a 16GB iPhone. I had been sort of wanting one for the past couple months, but had held off. Then last Saturday, Joe wanted to get a new phone. We went up to K's in Kamisu and, sure enough, they had some in stock. He decided he wanted to get one. Cell phones here in Japan have changed a bit. Before, you had ...
