GOP Intellectual Center: Goldwater, McCarthy, Reagan, Elmer Gantry? (1)

Neal Gabler has a nice column in yesterday’s LA Times where he ponders the notion of the Republican intellectual center. He’s following avidly, as we all are, the infighting among the GOPers as they fight to remake themselves. Will the GOP follow the extremist social conservatives, or will they hearken back to a philosophy from an earlier time, to Reagan, or Goldwater? Gabler’s thesis is that there is not intellectual center for the Republican Party, ...Shared by rzklkng (15)Contribute comment - DHS Global Terrorism Database (1)

McCain’s Gift to the GOP, Palin the Time Bomb? (1)

There’s an interesting article by Rick Horowitz, reading the tea leaves as to just why John McCain gave us Sarah Palin as his running mate on that dark day in September. The theory he puts forth is that the offering to the religious right in this country was more like a poison pill, that the Palin candidacy would show the extremists on the religious right how little their power can effect things. Here’s a bit ...Shared by rzklkng (15)Contribute comment - Socialism for the Rich (5)

It seems we're approaching a new age here on the Internet. Instead being anonymous, faceless IP addresses, social computing and changing technologies have allowed the lines between the "real" world and the "virtual" world to blur. Web 2.0 helped create a world where your identity is revealed in bits and pieces as you share snippets of your life online - a photo here, a Stumble there, a tweet, a Digg, etc. However, the rise of ...Shared by Alan Dean (14) Alexandre Gamela (15) Andy Beal (18) andyed (5) Anna Lynn (11) Benjamin Doherty (25) Botgirl Questi (7) Brian (7) Cesar H Castro Jr (13) Chul Park (10) cindy (2) dave mcclure (1) dogan kaya (1) fred buddemeyer (1) Kevin Champion (3) Kris Haamer (5) Krispijn (11) Mark (1) Mark Gehrke (6) MCK2007 (13) Mike Fruchter (55) Morton Fox (32) Nick Jones (3) Nitin (6) rzklkng (15) Tina (12)Contribute comment -

I am a bit more optimistic about the economy these days (up to a 3 on a 10 point scale, up from a 1 a few weeks back). Why? Well, before I go into my theory lets rewind and review some theory by some actual economists.John Maynard Keynes, whose work is becoming mainstream once more, suggested that a developing recession can be cured through an expansionary monetary policy (i.e. increasing the money supply) when the ...Shared by rzklkng (15)Contribute comment -
Nastiest Bear Markets In History: How Does Ours Compare? (3)

Doug Short (via Barry Ritholtz) offers this interesting chart of four nasty 20th Century bear markets: 1929, Nikkei, NASDAQ, and our current S&P 500. As the chart shows, we're right on track for... well, we're right on track for any of the scenarios, as well as for a recovery. But regardless of how this one ends, we're off to a historically horrific start. And here's another good one, showing a shorter time span. Note that ...Contribute comment -

Today’s the day that Facebook makes their big press push for their Facebook Connect service, which was first announced last May. The NY Times has a story giving a broad overview of Connect as well as competing services from MySpace (Data Availability) and Google (Friend Connect). All three services are platforms for third party sites (Digg, Twitter, Citisearch, CBS, whatever) to let users sign in via their favorite social network instead of the normal approach. ...Shared by Aaron Fanley (4) Adam (1) Aelle (1) Alex Flint (4) Andrew Hughes (9) Arren V (53) AshTR (9) Atit (6) Aviva Gabriel (26) Brad Nadler (7) Brendon Wadey (27) Cam (7) castig (3) Charl (7) Charles Balazs (19) Charli Jessup (1) Chetan Thaker (18) chewtoy (1) Chris Fizik (1) Chris J. Just before the election, Michael Porter, the Harvard Business School expert of competitiveness, wrote an article for Business Week entitled Why America Needs an Economic Strategy. Although this would seem to be obvious, Porter points out that for 30 years we have not had such a strategy. America’s political system, especially as it has evolved in recent times, almost guarantees an absence of strategic thinking at the federal level. Government leaders react to current events ...Shared by Eric Silva (0) rzklkng (15)Contribute comment -
