By Jesse Stay of Stay N' Alive (Twitter/FriendFeed)I've been following several people on FriendFeed that I'm a big fan of and are fairly active Twitter users. Until recently, I would like their Tweets and share them with my followers regularly. However, I'm realizing a trend amongst new FriendFeed users, including some of these Twitter users I follow, in which they pick one or two services and neglect to share the other places they belong to. ...

An ongoing conversation about the viability and credibility of Twitter-based ad network Magpie led Brandon J. Mendolson to come up with a nifty idea: republish our perspectives on the issue (I don’t have a problem with it as I see “sponsored tweets” as being a close cousin to sponsored blog posts, as I get into here, and Brandon is firmly against) on our respective blogs. Therefore, I present to you Brandon’s take on the issue ...

We’ve arrived in Barcelona, Spain for Nokia World, a week where Nokia talks to its top customers. When we got here a Nokia executive met me and bragged that the Internet has no clue what they will announce this week. I asked “what about the touch screen cell phone that I’ve seen rumors about?” He said that no one had gotten it right yet. The announcements are on Wednesday morning (it’s early Monday morning as ...

Facebook Connect--the service launched last spring that lets members log on to other Web sites using their Facebook profile--appears to be entering a new phase. The New York Times, in a big-picture story Sunday about the social network's plans to extend its reach across the Web, notes that the Facebook Connect service is gearing up for expansion: In the next few weeks, a number of prominent Web sites will weave this service into their pages, ...

I do this too much - post something short, as a note to myself and all of you that there is way more to say, then end with "I'll say more in the next post." Then I get busy and forget about that "next post" thing, and start posting on other stuff. What I really meant was, "in my next post on this topic." Hope that clarifies things. OK. So what was I talking about ...

One year ago link shortening service TinyURL experienced an extended period of down time and we argued that the outage illustrated serious risks associated with the service. One year later, the landscape doesn't look any less bleak. A search of the web turns up complaint after complaint after complaint about TinyURL being down and links being broken - apparently for at least a day or two every month. People should stop using TinyURL! In the ...

Twitter is emerging as a major force in breaking news. But some people disagree. Today we saw yet another illustration, when people in Mumbai got the word of terrorist attacks out to the world well before mainstream media even knew something was happening. Mathew Ingram points out previous examples of Twitter users breaking important world news. If I didn’t hear about something important happening by watching my Twitter stream, it’s the first place I go ...

how is it possible that this is only *just* starting to make news? A sure sign of the times is when we hear of an event and then start a count for how long it takes news services to report on it.

I work at a large company. My nature is to move quickly, which often feels impossible. In the past few weeks, a lot of the impossibility has involved not knowing the right people. A lot of smart people think about this, for example the labcoats behind Organization Network Analysis. Looking at how people work together in a network can often yield surprising insights into whether the organization can move fast or slowly. A lot of ...

Yesterday I saw (and twittered) a comScore report on online spending this holiday season. So far this holiday season (comScore calls Nov & Dec the holiday shopping season), $8.2bn has been spent online which is down 4% versus the same time period last year. Last night I happened across a stealth startup that’s growing quickly entitled Mr. Tweet. The site bills itself as your “personal assistant for Twitter,” but it functions as a very interesting version of Facebook’s friend finder. The site asks you for your Twitter username, and then processes your connections and the content of your tweets. I input my name this morning, and by late this afternoon, it DM’d me with my ready report. The report ...

I love the title "Reality Check 2.0" but all credit should go to Susan (citation link below). This recession/depression is poised to eclipse any downturn we’ve seen in our lifetimes. As I canvas the Enterprise 2.0 landscape, I find myself wondering: what is our killer economic crisis app/movement? Twitter? Facebook? Will we save the U.S auto industry by social networking? Really? I can assure you, there will be no Federal bail outs for 2.0 startups. ...
