MSNBC just noted that with Gustav likely to hit the Gulf Coast next week this could be a "split-screen convention" for the Republicans. A Gulf Coast hurricane disrupting the GOP's messaging during convention week -- three years after Katrina hit (the anniversary is tomorrow) -- the irony would be enough to make my head explode.

Readers know my personal disdain for Bill Clinton. But longtime readers will also know I have always defended his solid centrist, smart record in office and defended him against his most over-reaching enemies. Tonight, I think, was one of the best speeches he has ever given. It was a direct, personal and powerful endorsement of Obama. But much, much more than that: it was a statesman-like assessment of where this country is and how desperately ...

John McCain is still trying to make hay from Obama's remark that "Iran, Cuba, Venezuela — these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union." Matt tries to help him out by mapping the situation: Stark, but I'm not sure straight land mass is the best way to think about this. After all, we're human beings. We're afraid of bees. So here's a graph comparing the population of Iran and Soviet Union in 1991, back ...

The item of choice for many Democratic convention attendees to bring home to their children is the new version of the classic Stratego board game. Instead of soldiers on a battlefield, it pits Democrats and Republicans against each other in their campaign for the White House. It's a must have for any family of political junkies.

While most Democrats felt Sen. Hillary Clinton gave an outstanding speech last night in support of Sen. Barack Obama, one criticism is that she didn't make the case for why Obama is ready to be president. It's been the main Republican talking point for several weeks. This morning, Obama campaign officials we've spoken to are unconcerned since they believe that Bill Clinton is better positioned as a former president to make that point in his speech ...

I'd hoped this to be the case, Bubba gets to point out that Obama is older than Bill was when he took office, had a tougher primary season, and has more international experience than he did. Bill will bring down the house if he unequivocally proclaims BO ready to lead on day 1.

Marc does some reporting:There's a debate about whether Hillary should have vouched for Obama's commander in chief credentials. Here is why, according to an aide, she did not. Had she done that, all the media would focus on is the disparity between her convention praise and her primary criticism. And she would not have sounded genuine. It would have been contrived.
