The United States graduates about 70,000 engineers each year, and another 30,000 with advanced engineering degrees, according to Daniel Hastings, Dean of Undergraduate Education at MIT. The numbers could be double that. On average about 50% of U.S. engineering students dropout. John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins argues that we must encourage more U.S. students to choose engineering. The 90/10 rule of marketing a job (76)

Most hiring managers don't understand organizations that go to extraordinary lengths to find and retain amazing people. And from their point of view, they're completely correct. Pay market wage, run a classified, process the resumes. Done. It only takes 10% as much effort to hire someone in the bottom 90% of the class. And it takes the other 90% to find and cajole and retain the top 10%. - Daniel J. Pritchett said: "If your organization can thrive with ordinary folks, then the marketing you're doing right now to fill the ranks might even be overkill. You've got plenty of resumes. No need to pretend you're doing anything much more than bottom fishing, though. That plaque for employee of the month? You can sell it on eBay.On the other hand, organizations that work best with extraordinary talent are almost certainly not investing enough in finding and developing it. If marketing works so well that you spend a fortune on it, why aren't you marketing your jobs? If talent is so important that you are betting the company on it, why aren't you actually investing in finding and retaining that talent?"
- Nate said: Most companies I know of in technology are investing--very heavily at that--to keep top talent. Marketing is a good mindset to approach hiring with: a company's brand image and the perception of the culture and coolness is a distinct reflection of how much people want to work there.

He says a lot of stuff I like here, especially when he recognizes that advertising, done correctly, is *not* advertising. It is relating to, understanding, using and believing in a product ... and then simply telling others about it and why you like it - personally or in some other way where a bond of trust occurs. Remove the trust and you have an "ad" or "spam" or whatever you want to call 99.999999% of what passes for advertising these days.I voted for Obama largely because I trust him more than I trust any of the punk rethuglican fascist liars. I know he'll do stuff that I think is stupid, but even then, I trust he has a lot more on the ball than I do when it comes to public service and civics and vision. He has earned that trust largely through words at this point. Now it's time to see if his actions reconfirm that trust.”Annette replies: At its core advertising/marketing is simply communicating - communicating about a product or service. Somewhere along the line, in many instances, creating a need rather than fulfilling a need. (I think Curtis Adams documentary "The Century of Self" discusses the idea). Much of that type of advertising is fear-based - you know the kind. If you teeth aren't bleached paper white no one will like you. It's not nice to fool Mother Nature! And so on. I loathe that kind of advertising and my dislike of it has cost me at least one client.Trust is one reason I support Obama. His seeming ability to listen, think and digest ideas are other reasons. I'm also relieved to soon have a person in the White House who doesn't scream fear-based bullshit at his constituents, nor smirk or sneer in arrogance at us.
