NYT on "ambient awareness," ethereal intimacy, and internet ESP (17)

Boing Boing (4548) permalink
I'm reading and re-reading a NYT Magazine piece that explores ambient telepresence, as made mundane by Twitter, Facebook, AIM, and the like. The writer, Clive Thompson, really nailed a number of things I've been struggling to put into words for years. It's a terrific read. This is the paradox of ambient awareness. Each little update — each individual bit of social information — is insignificant on its own, even supremely mundane. But taken together, over ...Shared by Andrew N. Douglas Rushkoff on the RNC (39)

Our pal Douglas Rushkoff posted an insightful essay about the RNC speeches. I felt a bit nauseous watching the Republican convention last night. I’m very much a give-the-benefit-of-the-doubt kind of guy, so I try to listen to the arguments people make even when they’re made in over-the-top or patronizing ways. Sometimes it’s good to distinguish between the rhetorical devices and the underlying substance. Even people who use manipulative language sometimes have an important point beneath ...Shared by Adam Bohannon (8) Arion (19) Ben V (7) bridgie (26) brokekid (134) Bryan (4) Casey (16) Fearghas (13) g b (41) Gonzo (23) INCyr (29) J. Wasilla Assembly of God Clip Jason Pettus says, This is reportedly video footage from the Pentecostal church Sarah Palin belongs to, clearly showing dozens of members of the congregation speaking in tongues and wandering zombie-like through the aisles, also occasionally thrashing on the floor in front of the pulpit.
