Readers may have noticed that Google changed the way it displays search results this week: the Google logo is smaller, results are indented and spacing has been added above the search box. Google also removed the page size indicator, which gives you a hint of how long the page might take to load. Reader Marek Foss sent us screenshots comparing the old and the new layout (below), which he feels looks more like Google AdSense ...

Modernizr is a new library that detects various HTML5 and CSS3 features and lets you know so you can use them: Writing conditional CSS with Modernizr Now, once your page loads, Modernizr will run and go through all of its tests. It will automatically add all the classes to the <body> element of the page, and these classes will be along the lines of body.feature or body.no-feature, with the former indicating that the current browser ...

While not every tweak to YouTube’s system deserves a post, this one is pretty significant, though very straightforward as well. First, the 1GB file limit for YouTube videos has been doubled to 2GB; this is a boon to many users who have been uploading high definition content more than a few minutes long. Ten minutes of 1080p footage can easily exceed a gig, especially if you’ve been editing it and weren’t careful about re-encoding. A ...

The goal was for there to be at least one standard video codec that would work across all HTML 5 browsers — one format that would work across browsers and platforms with no plugins. But, alas, the result is an impasse. Apple won’t support Ogg Theora, and Mozilla and Opera won’t support H.264. (Google, admirably, is willing to support both in Chrome, but they don’t consider Ogg good enough to use for YouTube.) So there ...

It's five dollars. It has half the functionality of Twittelator Pro. But Birdfeed just became my default iPhone Twitter app. It's fast. The fastest Twitter app I've seen since Twitterfon (which isn't that fast anymore, once it started inserting ads.) Palm emerged in the 1990s as one of the innovative champions of mobile computing. The company practically defined the handheld computer form-factor and contributed many technical concepts and user interface paradigms that are still found in some of the most popular mobile devices. Hopefully we will see the same possibilities for the iPhone and Android platform as well soon: "A message bus is used to expose underlying platform capabilities to third-party applications through JavaScript. This means that third-party webOS software has full access to hardware features like the GPS and camera, and it also has the ability to leverage software features like the addressbook and dialer. It's worth noting that Palm's own first-party applications, such as the calendar, are built with the same technology."
