Official Google Blog: Google learns to crawl Flash (176)
on The Official Google Blog (396) permalinkPosted by Ron Adler and Janis Stipins, Software EngineersGoogle has been developing a new algorithm for indexing textual content in Flash files of all kinds, from Flash menus, buttons and banners, to self-contained Flash websites. Recently, we've improved the performance of this Flash indexing algorithm by integrating Adobe's Flash Player technology. In the past, web designers faced challenges if they chose to develop a site in Flash because the content they included was not indexable by ...Shared by (``-_-´´) (172) 4r1f (2) Abhishek (19) Abhishek (10) Adam (100) aemkei (19) Ahmed (16) Akshat (41) Alberto (29) Alberto (4) Alex (5) Amihai (27) Amit (2) Andrew Ruess (199) Aneel (16) Angus (43) Anthony (42) Anu (8) anupam (16) Archit T (20) Arindam (26) Atilano (64) atul (231) Azeem (37) Barbara K. Using Google Charts for Cluster Performance Monitoring (7)
on Kevin Burton's NEW FeedBlog (7) permalinkI’ve been looking at replacing Munin with our own higher level proprietary monitoring system for keeping track of cluster-wide statistics. This is needed for a new feature we’re trying to ship with Spinn3r so that we can expose some of our internal statistics to our customers. We weren’t able to do this before because our internal monitoring was a bit of a hack due to the lack of quality in the open source monitoring tool ...Contribute comment

Optimal startup burn rate and the Kelly criterion « Laserlike (11)
on Laserlike (10) permalinkIn my last post, The Product, Part II: Technical architecture and the innovator’s paradox I talked about the importance of staying in the game and linked to a Wikipedia article on the Kelly criterion. In the comments, entrepreneur and physicist Max Skibinsky took the idea literally and used the Kelly criterion to calculate the optimal burn of a startup. I was so impressed with Max’s comment, that I imported his Google spreadsheet into Excel and ...Shared by Alberto (4) atul (231) Charles (6) dave mcclure (12) Jay Liew (22) Kartik Agaram (7) Mahesh (17) Murat Aktihanoglu (3) Sam Pullara (23) Shane (27) Stanislav Shalunov (0)Contribute comment

The possibility for collective action. Do Mobile OS Platforms Matter? - RussellBeattie.com (15)
on Russell Beattie’s Weblog (46) permalinkThe big news today is that Nokia is spending nearly half a billion dollars for the rest of Symbian and will turn it into a non-profit organization and open OS. It's got everyone buzzing about how this is an attempt on Nokia's part to "take on" Android (because Vendor Wars always makes good copy), but I think that's a far too simplistic explanation. Backing up for a second, let's examine what the Symbian OS is, ...Shared by Alberto (4) Antony (23) Cem (29) dalelane (25) Erik C. Thauvin (59) Gregor J. Phone in the Toilet? (32)
on O'Reilly Radar - Insight, analysis, and research about emerging technologies (217) permalinkMy friend Sara sent me an email: "Linda, Sorry that I'm not able to call you back. My phone fell into the toilet." We live in a world where phones can fall into toilets because our phones are following us everywhere. Untethered. Free. Free to fall into the toilet. Revision3 (49)
on Revision3 » blog (1) permalinkA bit of address translation, and we’d discovered our nemesis. But instead of some shadowy underground criminal syndicate, the packets were coming from right in our home state of California. In fact, we traced the vast majority of those packets to a public company called Artistdirect (ARTD.OB). Once we were able to get their internet provider on the line, they verified that yes, indeed, that internet address belonged to a subsidiary of Artist Direct, called ...Shared by Alberto (4) andronin (8) Brandon (39) bucks14 (16) cgsheldon (653) charlie anzman (154) chip (136) Chris (32) Chris Nixon (59) cisellis (26) dafmetal (9) Dileepa (12) dolphonia (1) Donnie Berkholz (25) eurotransient (21) Franklin P (63) Fredrik Wennberg (7) FVT or FVTer (19) Gabriel (22) gyakusetsu (17) ignace / micronauta (38) ilennox (4) J.
