Mother Jones interactive military presence map (28)
on Boing Boing (18500) permalinkMother Jones launched an interactive map that shows US military presence around the world from 1950 to 2007. It's based on worldwide troop data from the Pentagon. From Mother Jones: These numbers are often fuzzy: Some deployments are classified, others are temporary, and just because the Defense Department claims 30 US troops in Indonesia last year doesn't mean 1,500 didn't pass through on training missions. Even so, the map, and the associated research, should give ...Shared by Ben Turner (140) benh (141) brokekid (438) Carl (84) Chris (225) Christopher (25) Chuck Lawson (31) E.C. Kids can't "go out and play" anymore (74)

- seanness said: I've been noticing this for years. Parents coddle way too much here in the US. Exploration and independence was a big part of my childhood. I remember walking 7 miles to my grandmothers house when I was 10 (with my brother), along a busy road (we thought it was at the time) and the only harm was that we learned it was better to ride our bikes there. Parents...let your kids out of the backyard!
- SusanVillasLewis said: Wow. And here I have been jealous of the "structured" activities that kids get to do these days. We didn't have those when I was a kid. I had to make up my own fun playing in the yard with my siblings. Guess I did have it better not getting to do soccer or karate or dance.

I was between 2 and 5, and stepped on the nail in my dad's study upstairs at the Providence Forge Presbyterian Church -- which is not exactly like the junkyard in /Stand By Me/.I also fell out of a "car bed" and cracked my head on the runners for the Volvo's front seat. Ironically, my parents had traded the VW Beetle for the Volvo because the Volvo was safer. Last I checked, there was no permanent damage from either injury.

Toastabags grill cheese sandwiches in your toaster with reusable bags (15)
on Boing Boing Gadgets (1322) permalinkMaking a croque madame with a toaster is an apocalyptic affair.
