Scientists Identify a Potentially Universal Mechanism of Aging (21)
on
Slashdot (61) permalink
cybergenesis2008 points us to a summary of research out of Harvard Medical School in which a set of genes known to affect aging in yeast was found to affect aging in mice as well. The genes, called sirtuins, perform two particular tasks; regulating which genes are "on" and "off," and also helping to repair damaged DNA. As an organism ages, the frequency of damage to DNA increases, leaving less time for the sirtuins' regulatory tasks. ...Shared by a77ila (31) Adrian Thornton (0) Christopher (0) Crossbar (1) cyotee (0) Dr. Howell (6) harleycw (0) Jamin (8) JonTheGeek (3) Kris Haamer (0) Lorin (5) Marcelo Galvani (9) Marin Purgar (4) pasparto (0) psvensson (1) ScorpFromHell (0) Tanath (2) terri (12) Thadius Krueger (3) Tiago D'Herbe (3) toomanytribbles (2)Explore read five notes- JonTheGeek said: Huh, they found the mechanism for resveratrol (the stuff in grapes/wine that has been linked to longer life). We knew this day would eventually come, but somehow we're still misting up a little -- Linux has been ported to the iPhone and iPod touch.
