Fascinating excerpt from Malcolm Gladwell’s soon-to-be-released Outliers: The Story of Success: This idea — that excellence at a complex task requires a critical, minimum level of practice — surfaces again and again in studies of expertise. In fact, researchers have settled on what they believe is a magic number for true expertise: 10,000 hours. - lishevita said: Genius takes 10,000 hours, or about ten years of 3 hours a day, to blossom into world class success says this article. So, if you aren't a world class expert at anything today, what do you want to spend 10,000 hours refining? Or what are you already putting your hours into?
- Sandra said: Craig...this is an excerpt from the article the highlights a similar statistic to the one I like to use about soccer players.
- Kenny Stoltz said: Reshared from Mike.I like the idea of this... expertise in a job would take 4.8 years. That probably explains the 5-year-itch, etc. But it doesn't really explain the burnout: why would you spend 10,000 hours at something to be an "expert" and not leverage your expertise? I suppose the best explanation is that human beings are flawed (or at least irrational).

A new study details how spammers – the bane of our email inboxes – still make pots of money, despite only receiving a response to one in every 12,500,000 emails they spam out.The study, by a team of seven computer scientists from University of California, Berkeley and UC, San Diego (UCSD) infiltrated the Storm network, which uses hijacked home PCs to relay much of the junk email you spend your days wading through while wondering ...Shared by 1938 Media (0) AmyVernon (86) Avi (59) chris (0) Darren (0) jason o (15) Joe R (24) John Kivit (0) Kate (29) Kol Tregaskes (2) Lance (27) Leena (85) luke (0) Mike Harris (0) Mr. BabyMan (23) Reid (1) stefan (0) Zak M. We are not 4 full days into the Obama transition period and already three web executives have made theoir way into the mix in some kind of advisory role. Yesterday, we covered the naming of Julius Genachowski of Launchbox Digital and Sonal Shah of Google.org to the transition team. Today, the New York Times points out that Google CEO Eric Schmidt has been named to his economic advisory board. This got me thinking about what ...Shared by 1938 Media (0) Duncan Riley (6) Folkert Ringnalda (0) Jared Mehle (0) M. Black (6) Mike Fruchter (46)Contribute comment -

My post earlier about Howard Stern was picked up by my New York connection, Allen Stern, who, as far as I know, is of no relation to Howard (for disclosure purposes). Apparently Gary Vaynerchuk, a wine dealer turned “Internet celebrity,” came across Allen’s post and it got him “absolutely pumped.” In Vaynerchuk’s video blog, he takes [...]Shared by 1938 Media (0) Duncan Riley (6)Contribute comment - Let's Try This Again: If You Want To Laugh (1)
