This weekend Samsung alerted me that my cell phone was ready for an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.1 which apparently also set the GPS receiver to "on". This morning I went out for a walk, loaded Google Maps, clicked "use GPS" and started walking. This was my first time with my own GPS unit and damn is it precise. On my walk home I realized Google now knows where I've been walking. While I didn't ...

Wondering how to embed images in blog posts? Well, it's pretty easy with the right tools. Now that Flickr, PicasaWeb and Skitch accept images sent to them via email, you can pretty much upload photos you take with your mobile phone straight to your favorite one. Some folks like to take screenshots--I do quite a bit--and there are a million ways to accomplish it. However, here are the easiest I've found on all 3 platforms that ...

The current economic collapse is a difficult story for TV. It's a peculiar period in between an election and an inauguration. This most important story, this great-or-not-so great depression, is also the hardest for CNN to tell. I have more than enough reasons why in this late-night rant. 1) It's not a hurricane so Anderson Cooper of CNN is unable to position himself in the middle of the storm for optimal drama. In other words, ...

Perhaps they need to get the This American Life: Economy Episodes people on but sadly the medium is perhaps flawed.

Actually, it shouldn't be. But TV has gotten into a belief that things like this can only be explained by competing viewpoints. When in fact there are many aspects of the financial crisis that need explanation and many of the institutions need to have their roles explained.

Blogging As Pressing “Copy” on a Xerox Machine (1)

I have come across a new, and less desirable mode of blogging. Someone who just grabs something, tosses it on the glass, and leans their thumb on the green “copy” button of the Xerox machine (I thought of writing this as a “ditto” metaphor but would have lost most of my slim audience). Yeah something I created got lifted and put elsewhere. And I cannot do anything… because I granted permission. So it goes like ...

You know how you can’t let some things go? Well, the back of my mind is often processing ways to demonstrate to people the value of reading and writing blogs. Recently I read an educator’s comments about introducing teachers to Web 2.0 practices, where he says he wouldn’t start with blogging, but provide teachers with examples of great blogs to read. Often people considering blogging will say that they don’t know what to blog about. ...

Don’t look now but FriendFeed is getting a little greedy these days. It no longer seems content to be merely a social networking aggregator. It seems to want to be a content provider instead of just a conduit for all our information. How so you ask? Well, it’s always provided a platform to post messages just like we do on other platforms but now they’ve added some cool new features that truly make it tempting ...

I’ve been taking a closer look at my Google Reader feeds lately, and, as always, I’m trying to stem the tide so the signal can rise above the noise. I’ve done a little spring cleaning, which for me doesn’t mean unsubscribing – I’m always hesitant to do that – but instead, I’ve been re-categorizing. Is that feed really a “Can’t Miss” read? Shouldn’t that blogger be on my B-List? Doesn’t this feed belong in my ...

could be solved somewhat if GReader wouldn't show duplicates. A lot of people share stuff from blogs I'm already subscribed to, and/or stuff that someone else I follow has already shared. A filter to see only *unique* shared content would be awesome.

i rely on the shared feeds, to get the best filtered news... headlines make a huge difference... I am j,j,j,j,j thru some peoples though. Comments make a difference as to "Why I should read them?" Also, if I comment on Scobles shared item, why can't gReader see if someone else commented and join them all together?? ..

Guilty as charged. I am cutting down. Yesterday I purged my subscriptions. After looking at the Trends section in Google Reader I dumped feeds that had too many updates in a day (>15). Too much noise. I have a pretty lean list now. It is long but most do not update that frequently. I am also sharing less publicly and just starring things I like myself more selectively.

I'm making, er, well, making *more* of an effort these days to "share" things where I think they belong. Whether that's Shared Reader Items, preferably with a note, or funneled over to Friendfeed as a standalone post there, or saved to Delicious if it's actually something I want to *bookmark* for reference... And this week, I've started blogging more, so I'm clicking through to original posts to blog those links more often, too.
