Some not so useful useful but cool sounding and true analogies I have used during my office hours while teaching undergrads about circuits: Charging a capacitor is like falling out of an airplane. “Charging” an inductor is like a bunch of uranium decaying. A circuit with an inductor and a capacitor is like a pendulum. A circuit with an inductor, capacitor, and resistor is like a pendulum in oil. A circuit with an inductor, capacitor, ...

This function is a two-dimensional one. It's radially symmetric however, so we can specify it with only one coordinate - the distance from the origin r. It's the two-dimensional Gaussian function, and it looks like this: As r increases, -r^2 very quickly becomes a large negative number. The exponential function falls off rapidly toward zero at negative arguments, and so as you move away from the origin the value of the function is pretty much ...

"Is there ONE painting, sticker, stencil, sculpture, or piece of architecture that truly inspires you in your daily work?" "This is an old and public artwork from David Shrigley. All his production is very funny and inspiring, i could watch his illustrations for the whole day, but i think this pic is probably the most innocent and visionary one. The first time i saw it was years ago and i got shocked by the energy ...

This is a spectacular video of the development of Clypeaster subdepressus, also called a sand dollar or sea biscuit. These are stunningly beautiful creatures (as are we all, of course), and it is so cool to see them changing here. The video starts with a little echinoderm porn — these animals are profligate with their gametes — and then we see early divisions, gastrulation, the formation of the pluteus larva, metamorphosis into Aristotle's lantern (one ...

Scientist John Hart created a remix of Shepard Fairey's Obama poster from 150 million carbon nanotubes, each of which measured tens of thousands of times smaller than a human hair. That sure is a lot of tiny Obamas. Snip: Even then, the finished product is only half a millimetre in diameter and almost indistinguishable from any other garden variety micro dot - unless you happen to be looking at it through a microscope. The magnification ...

Pixeljam is the spot for those of us who lived through the 80’s hooked to our Nintendos or other early generation systems, had tantrums when the controllers were confiscated and maybe had a few seizures from staring at the screen for too long. Rich and Miles have gone back and revisited the concepts of some of their favorite 8-bit games and done the unthinkable… made them better, thanks to the wonders of Flash animation! Check ...

By Andrew Liszewski Have you ever been to a science center or museum and watched someone’s hair stand on end while they were touching that giant metal sphere contraption? Well that device is known as a Van de Graaff generator, and this wand from ThinkGeek is basically a handheld version of that, but with considerable less ‘oomph.’ However, it can build up enough static charge to make a set of included 3D mylar shapes appear ...

Hahaha. This yakiniku restaurant in Japan comes with manga illustrated instructions plus an explanation in Japanese and English. It could have just said, put the meat on the grill, but instead is says: Spread the meat to the grill with fizzle to the sizzle. Link
