Rogers has quietly bolstered its wireless data plans this week to improve its options for iPhones and other smartphone users, according to forum posts from observers. The carrier has introduced an as-yet unpublished $30 Data Value Pack that combines 500MB of monthly data with 10,000 outbound text messages, Visual Voicemail on the iPhone, caller ID, and a WhoCalled text notification of missed call...

After I linked to a report suggesting that the new second-generation iPod Touch has a faster CPU than the iPhone or previous Touch, Craig Hockenberry suggested on Twitter that new-Touch-owning developers could run his hardware info code, based on the Unix sysctl() call, to see what it reports. A few DF readers did just that, and indeed, it reports a faster CPU and bus. The iPhone, iPhone 3G, and original iPod Touch all report a ...

RED already has a second major announcement due early next month, company head Jim Jannard says in a community teaser. Having just launched the EPIC and Scarlet revisions and the DSMC system earlier this month, the greater-than-HD camera maker now promises a "big change" on December 3rd and calls the earlier announcements "insignificant" by comparison. Details of the new announcement itself rema...

As the prices of professional quality video equipment continue to drop and the number of people with high-speed internet connections continues to increase, online video sites have been scrambling to keep up with their users' desires to deliver higher quality content to their viewers. YouTube is no different. Today, they announced the latest enhancement to the YouTube platform - a widescreen video format across the site - which they hope will provide users with "a ...

Digg founder Kevin Rose issued an apology this morning for statements he made on the latest edition of his video podcast Diggnation. Just after the 4 minute mark in the show Rose and co-host Alex Albrecht were making jokes about men getting into physical fights with women and and Rose made a statement that a particular act of violence was appropriate as an act of retribution in some circumstances. An excerpted transcript and the text ...

Filed under: Video, Open SourceThe well known, open-source DVD ripping and video transcoding application HandBrake has been updated to version 0.9.3. Among the changes, perhaps the most exciting is universal input -- now you can use HandBrake to convert any kind of video file it recognizes, not just DVDs. This is particularly exciting given the recent demise of the much loved VisualHub (although the open-source reworking of VisualHub via the TranscoderRedux project is underway). In ...

Now that iPhone Firmware 2.2 is out (all 245.7MB of it), what do we all think of it? Initial reactions around the web seem broadly positive, and my own experience so far matches that. In recent weeks I’ve been seeing quite frequent application crashes on my 2nd gen iPhone, so I’ll be interested to see if they happen less often now. On very first impressions, the phone feels faster and snappier in use post-update. Most ...

Recently MacLife magazine reviewed Apple’s MobileMe service. My problem with the review is that it lists something as a negative that continues to spread misinformation: Doesn’t “push” your email instantly, rather every 15 minutes. This is wrong. In this article I’ll touch on what gets synced with MobileMe, when it occurs, and why I’m happy with it. First, keep in mind the following about MobileMe: Many think MMe is just email, contacts, and calendars, but ...

Ok, it was built by users uploading copyright clips of lots of different media outfits, but nonetheless, the group’s influence on the video sharing site has been huge. This week, they’ve decided to get a piece of the action for themselves, creating an official channel on YouTube so there are “No more of those crap quality videos ...

According to a new report by Accenture, a large number of Millennials (those born between 1977 and 1997), expect their companies to accommodate their IT preferences, including their preferred computers and applications. More than a third of Millennials also indicated that they were dissatisfied with the technologies their employers currently provide. Among other things, Millennials would prefer to use instant messaging, text messaging, and RSS feeds to communicate with their clients and customers, though very ...

I was glad to see this report to find out I'm not the only one. At my current day job, we receive quarterly emails telling us not to use a variety of services, but no one ever checks into it. I was told once that if a monitoring system were implemented, everyone would be fired. I think the key is to figure out how to work with these services, not to just block them wholesale.
