Filed under: Utilities, Windows, Freeware Windows Explorer keeps getting a tiny bit better with each new Windows release. But for some reason Microsoft refuses to offer one thing that many other file managers have had for years: a two-pane window. If you want to copy files from one folder to another, you need to open two separate Explorer windows. There are a whole slew of free replacements for Windows Explorer. But one of the new ...

Job interview master Vj Vijai describes how make the best impression at a technical interview using people skills (versus technical skills). His talk, which happened at O'Reilly's awesome Ignite event, is informative, funny, and short. Vijai also has a web site outlining the principles, linked below. The next Ignite will happen in NYC on 7/29. Thanks, Brady! Hacking the Technical Interview

The election wasn't going to be close. Hollywood and the Main Stream Media were stacked against her and Arnold had his repeal of the automobile registration fee increase to entice voters to tag along in his bid to unseat Gray Davis in the 2003 recall election. Though her internet video "The Hybrid versus the Hummer" achieved the goal of introducing Arianna Huffington to the bloggosphere's power, it wasn't enough to overcome the advantages Schwarzenegger had ...

I hate Skittles. I perfected this dislike while covering the invasion of Iraq, because the gummy pills of sugar and fruit were included in the MREs fed to soldiers, Marines, and journalists who were racing to Baghdad in 2003. On the continuum of foods I can't stand, they are surpassed only by lima beans. But the cameo of a red pack of Skittles in the opening scene of David Simon's new HBO miniseries, Generation Kill, ...

When my wife and I approached our financial meltdown, our financial planning and spending was in pure chaos. We both spent according to our whims and we tackled bills and such without any real pattern or consistency. Neither of us had any real idea what the other was doing financially, and we certainly didn’t have any big dreams that we shared beyond the nebulous “let’s build a house in the country” idea that we’d floated ...

The two meltdowns started in much the same way - with busted stock-and- ...

Apparently multiple shootings and animal porn aren't the only problems facing the Chicago-area. Some disturbed Arlington Heights vandals decided to show one woman what they thought of her "Obama For President" signs by rubbing fecal matter all over them. Wait...what? Robin Harris of Arlington Heights discovered Wednesday night that someone had smeared feces on two Obama presidential campaign signs in her front yard. "I was horrified. I felt violated; someone was on my property," Harris ...

Editor: Being digital vagabonds without an Exchange server, we Lifehacker writers use online apps like Gmail and Google Calendar to get things done. But can an Outlook user make the switch without losing out? Guest contributor Jared Goralnick's here today to take a look. Gmail launched in 2004 and has matured each year, but Microsoft Outlook (with Exchange) is still the most popular tool for accessing email. Comparing the two side by side, is it ...

I've recently, finally, started to make great strides in converting my less tech savy friends and family to Gmail for personal emails. Due mostly, I think, to the fact that people are getting sick of not having access to their email absolutely everywhere. Why go through the trouble of configuring an email client on every machine you use? Your emails exist "in the cloud", so why not also your client? Next step, office documents.

There are only a few ways you can get a girl back who’s just broken up with you. First, you can send her flowers. But since that’s a little cliche, it will probably take a little more effort than that. Second, you could do something big like have a sky writer write her name in the sky. But since that’s pretty expensive, there’s little chance of you doing that. Instead, why not sit down with ...

At the airport, before his takeoff for the Middle East, no one will ask Barack Obama if he packed his bags himself. It would be rude, and besides he has a full-time handler for that. When you run across good-looking open source software which isn't available as an executable, installable file, it's time to get down and dirty with the source code at the command line. Tech tutorial site Webmonkey describes how to compile software from source. The process involves three main steps—the basic commands in order are configure, make, and make install. You can get tripped up if your system doesn't have a compiler, or the software has dependencies ...
