A fan of extremely simple, straight-forward web services? Then you probably know about amusing pet-projects like DownForEveryoneOrJustMe, GoingToRain or IsTwitterDown (variations apply). Here’s another one for your bookmarking pleasure that won’t make you go back to the website every time to check the uptime. NotifyMeWhenIt’sUp lets you enter any website or service suffering from downtime and sends you an e-mail notification as soon as it’s back up (and only when it was effectively down upon ...Shared by Alex (0) Ara (3) Burcu Sarar (0) Caitlin (0) cesaracardoso (10) christideli (15) codeAries (2) Colin (13) Compuwizard123 (13) crispy (0) Danr (287) Dave Vanhoudt (0) David Bisset (sn) (1) dexterc (0) groovysoup (0) Hamed Safa (0) Hoof (0) InspireMedia (0) Jake (3) Jared Cherup (0) jccamus (0) Jeff Blaze (0) Jeff Douglass (10) Jesse Stay (3) JonMoss-theappleofmyi (1) Kenny Kim (1) Nate (18) Neil Williams (0) PJ Kix (0) Rene Cunningham (15) Ricardo.Borelli (0) Ryan (0) sushi (7) Syng (0) Thomas (0) Yohan Launay - ConceptSL (20)Contribute comment -
JRuby and why it might be nice to be back on the JVM (1)

We ported our Rails application to JRuby in order to do some GC comparisons yesterday. Not a ton of changes required. Mostly replacing gems with native dependencies. YAML is a bit more strict than its MRI counterpart.... but all told, thats pretty amazing! Nice job JRuby crew! That said.... one interesting, entirely un-scientific, test case. After requesting the same URL 6 times, the VM got a lot better. 3.4s to 480ms Completed in 3380ms (View: ...Shared by crispy (0)Contribute comment -

With the help of Jamie van Dyke at Parfait and Scott Chacon at GitHub, I'm pleased to announce Acts As Git (no, I don't like the name either). It's a simple plugin which stores all changes you make to a text field in a git repository. This is ideal for something like a git-backed wiki. Look at it here: github or check it out from git://github.com/courtenay/acts_like_git.git From the README: ALG automagically saves the history of ...Shared by crispy (0) Ted (1)Contribute comment -

We upgraded the gems for one of our client projects, and the auto-loading / config.gems managed to completely break all our other projects, requiring upgrades, which caused weird breakages in weird places in some of the specs. The app would refuse to deploy (rake tmp:create failed, because lib/tasks/rspec.rake was being loaded, and spec wasn't installed on the server). The annoying thing was that just having whatever.11 installed (I don't know the exact ...Shared by crispy (0) Vitor Pellegrino (0)- Vitor Pellegrino said: o cara tá enfurecido mesmo hein :)

Thursday night Twitter engineer Alex Payne finally acknowledged the obvious regarding the firehose - the full stream of data sought after by third-party developers to add back the long-withheld Track service. Twitter executives have been all over the map on this, sending developers on a wild goose chase to obtain access to the XMPP stream that the company has failed to provide since May. Note: This feature has been greatly improved since the writing of this article. See here for the latest and greatest. Conditional-gets are a facility of the HTTP spec that provide a way for web servers to tell browsers that the response to a GET request hasn’t changed since the last request and can be safely pulled from the browser cache. They work by using the HTTP_IF_NONE_MATCH and HTTP_IF_MODIFIED_SINCE headers to pass back and forth both ...Contribute comment -

Death is an unfortunate consequence of life, at least until science can prove otherwise. You’re first asked to create profile detailing many of your last wishes, including the type of burial ...Shared by crispy (0) Ranjith (0)Contribute comment
