My first encounter with Spherical Harmonics must have been in the course on electrodynamics, when these intimidatingly looking functions showed up in series expansion of the Coulomb potential and in the multipole expansions of charge distributions. Ieri sera il CERN ha rilasciato il report ufficiale sull’incidente a LHC del 19 settembre scorso, dopo che finalmente il tunnel è stato messo in sicurezza, l’elio evacuato, i magneti riscaldati a temperatura ambiente e qualcuno è potuto scendere e guardare di persona che cosa è successo. Il 9 ottobre un radiotelescopio che si trova in Ucraina (foto) ha spedito 501 foto, disegni e messaggi verso Gliese 581C, pianeta scoperto qualche anno fa intorno a una stella che si trova a 20 anni luce da noi.
