Buttermilk Channel, a new Carroll Gardens bistro, opens tomorrow night. Owner Doug Crowell, a former manager of Blue Water Grill, thinks that people in the neighborhood who stop in for a bite to eat might notice some familiar touches in the newly completed dining room. “We bought a lot of things from stoop sales, cleaned them up, and used them here,” he said today. A giant suspension spring from an old truck on the bar ...Shared by nedward.org (0)Contribute comment -

Last night Pentagram's New York office was a host of the 5th Annual World Graphic Design Foosball Championship. Dozens of New York studios sent their best players to 3 locations around Manhattan to do battle before the winning teams moved on to the Fat Cat, the West Village bar-cum-foosball den, for the championship. Winners won. Losers lost. And for one night, designers were jocks. Sort of. Photos by Brian Raby.Shared by Lloyd (0) nedward.org (0)- Lloyd said: I wish I could've competed.

NYU Uses Magic Accounting to Fudge Dorm Crime Stats (3)

The Washington Square News, NYU's student paper, has a juicy article showing how their university artificially deflates campus crime stats by classifying 87% of its residence hall population as "off campus." The exposé sensationally notes that if you're a student who "gets murdered in Rubin residence hall, you were killed off-campus. You missed the cutoff by three blocks." Because it receives federal funds, NYU is required by law to publish its annual crime statistics, but ...Contribute comment - Jessica Hische on her Pogue-o-matic logos (1)

Deconstructing Google Mobile's Voice Search on the iPhone (24)

I've experimented with audio transcription lately, but always with big, clumsy humans. I'd happily use cyborgs speech recognition software, but even today, automatic conversion of voice-to-text is still flawed. Naturally, I was intrigued when Google announced they were adding voice searching to their Google Mobile iPhone app. Google's flirted with voice-to-text conversion in the past, with GOOG-411 and their Audio Indexing of political videos on YouTube. But this is the first time they're offering a ...Shared by Andrew Ruess (4) Danny (0) Dave Arter (0) David Hall (1) Dr. Ernie (0) Eduo (6) eschnou (0) exists (1) Grork (0) Jérôme Charron (0) Josh Bancroft (2) Lee Bryant (0) Matthew Bischoff (0) Maurice Svay (1) Michael Malone (1) msnoulten (0) nedward.org (0) Nicolas Gosset (0) Thomas Amberg (0) Till Krüss (0) Tony Buser (1) Tony Ruscoe (2) vicarum (1) Win (0)- exists said: This is the future of mobile apps.
