During my little power walk at dark o’clock this morning, I came across this little poster in leafy, sorta dull and fambly oriented Montclair. On the corner of a highly trafficked intersection. This gave me such joy! You NEVER see cheeky street art in Montclair of any sort so this was a welcomed sight. It gives me hope that the place is becoming a little less uptight through (further) gentrification. I see from checking Google ...

This Day in Peace History: On this day in 1859, "British naturalist Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species, which explained his theory of evolution. The basis for the theory is natural selection, the process by which organisms change over time as a result of changes in heritable (genetically based) physical or behavioral traits. Such changes allow an organism to better adapt to its environment and help it survive and have more offspring. Evolution ...

Harley in Action with classic EAT FUCK KILL button 1997?* Wow. Just read Harley’s see ya letter to BMORG. Funny how modern the word broke out. First, Danger Ranger twittered it, then the letter was posted to Tribe and naturally Scott Beale Twittered it, too. And surely all shit has broken loose on ePlaya. She has been there 17 long as years. This is a magnificent loss to those left holding the Burning bag. Harley ...

Watertiger notices that the Preznit had himself a drinky-poo at this weekend's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation gathering in Lima. It's described in this AFP report too: Even teetotalling US President George W. Bush, who famously quit drinking at 40, was spotted apparently sipping a pisco sour during the summit on Saturday. It was unclear whether he actually drank any, or whether it was an alcohol-free version. The White House rebuffed questions about the matter. Libby Spencer ...

ABC News' Matt Jaffe Reports: A New York elementary school has been re-named in honor of President-elect Barack Obama. Ludlum Elementary School in Long Island's Hempstead Union Free School District was re-named at a board meeting Thursday, at the request of numerous school students. "Just to watch these kids after the board voted on what they asked them to do, they were so elated," school district superintendent Dr. Joseph Laria told ABC News. "You want ...

The The Kids' Whole Future Catalog really is a treasure trove of 1980's futurism. Today we have a letter from Jenny, writing her friend Susan about the amazing space hotel she's visiting in the year 2002. Having graduated high school in the year 2002, I'm a little disappointed that my graduation ceremony wasn't held at a space hotel, complete with space pool and the accompanying physics that go along with that.April 16, 2002Dear Susan,We arrived ...

The Economist has some opinions on the current state of the GOP's intellectual leadership: There are any number of reasons for the Republican Party’s defeat on November 4th. But high on the list is the fact that the party lost the battle for brains. Barack Obama won college graduates by two points, a group that George Bush won by six points four years ago. He won voters with postgraduate degrees by 18 points. And he ...

NEW YORK — Cash or credit? For more Americans, who have already maxed out their credit cards or are just trying to manage their spending better in the tough economy, the answer is increasingly the old-fashioned one. Retailers like Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Target Corp. and J.C. Penney Co. are noticing a marked shift away from credit cards in favor of cash and debit cards. A big factor is less credit available as major card issuers ...

As we wrote yesterday evening, the ever-increasing number of challenged ballots in Minnesota is making it more and more difficult to determine the extent to which Al Franken is in fact gaining ground in the state's recount process. An analysis of precinct-by-precinct returns available on the Secretary of State's website, however, suggests that Franken's position is somewhat stronger than it appears, and that he may in fact be the favorite to prevail in the recount ...

It's difficult to avoid the comparisons between the current sad state of financial affairs and the Great Depression. "This is not like 1987 or 1998 or 2001," Merrill Lynch CEO John Thain said at a conference on Nov. 11. "We will in fact look back to the 1929 period to see the kind of slowdown we are seeing now." Time depicted President-elect Barack Obama on its cover as Franklin Delano Roosevelt. And in Washington, the ...

A semi-repentant Joe Lieberman took to the set of "Meet the Press" on Sunday, tasked with explaining his conduct on the campaign trail, his attacks on Barack Obama, and his future in the Democratic Party. Answers weren't exactly provided. During the interview with Tom Brokaw, Lieberman downplayed some of the criticisms he lobbed during the heat of the election. But the Senator wouldn't actually explain which statements he regretted. Asked to explain whether he truly ...

I've been genuinely mystified by the disappointment and surprise being expressed by many liberals over the fact that Obama's most significant appointments thus far are composed of pure Beltway establishment figures drawn from the center-right of the Democratic Party and, probably once he names his Defense Secretary and CIA Director, even from the Bush administration -- but not from the Left. ... So many progressives were misled about what Obama is and what he believes. ...
