Lauren at Double Takes just discovered Caroline Woolard’s Swinging Underground project, in which a backpack turns into a subway swing and adds a little whimsy to an otherwise dreary commute — for you and all your fellow commuters. When a Los Angeles man sued Apple for patent infringement Monday he filed the case in East Texas, not California. As many lawyers will tell you, the U.S. Distinct Court for the Eastern District of Texas has become a magnet for technology and other patent cases over the years. East-Texas justice tends to favor plaintiffs in patent disputes What fewer people know is why. The phenomenon dates to the early 1990s, says Michael Smith, a ...

Good short article in the Wall Street Journal's Business Technology section here yesterday by reporter Ben Worthen on the recent patent case filed against Apple in the Eastern District of Texas. Ben goes into the background of the district's patent docket (the well-known Texas Instruments story) and the changes in the docket from the "happy years" for plaintiffs from roughly 2004 to 2006 which ended with the "annus horribilis" of 2007. The story end with ...

For a young woman making the transition from college to workforce, public relations may seem like a good outlet for her communication skills and a liberal arts education. Still, it is important to consider the implications of choosing a career that reinforces gender stereotypes. Will securing a high-paying PR job really be a step forward for a woman? For women? Or will relegating oneself to the “caretaking” of corporate America be a step back, a step towards the kitchen and the home and the PTA meetings we’ve moved so far from? Do you really want to be a PR Girl?'

Finding vegan recipes on the Food Network is a rare thing indeed but sometimes you find one that's super easy to veganize. This Vegetable Curry recipe from a past episode of Good Eats is a case in point. Just swap in soy yogurt and you're good to go. This comes together in a snap and the variations are endless. We followed the recipe as is once last week and last night we swapped the mixed ...

Public mockery will have to wait until Sunday, so don't blame ATL if the site crashes. It's really an appropriate way to end the week. Looking fresh-faced wrapped in a classic Burberry scarf, former Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin gave an interview yesterday that can only be described as a pitiful attempt to get back on the Daily Show. In a 2008 news story on KTUU channel 2 in Anchorage, Palin is interviewed at a turkey farm while a man drains the blood from dead turkeys in the background. Do not watch the above clip if you plan on eating ...

Seven members of the Morton Ranch High School cheerleader squad were indicted for hazing. This marks the first time minors have been charged under the 1995 Texas anti-hazing statute. Their crime? Blindfolding junior cheerleaders and throwing them into a swimming pool. That's it: "This is what we've been waiting for," said Diane De La Cruz, mother of Laura De La Cruz, 15, one of the junior varsity cheerleaders. "We are thankful that the grand jury ...

Citation of law review articles. On a lark, I looked at the table of authorities for about two hundred party briefs filed in the past six months at the Federal Circuit. These briefs each cited many cases and statutes. Notably absent, however, were cites to law review articles. Out of the two hundred briefs, only two law review articles were cited — three if you count a citation to John Duffy’s Patently-O Patent L.J. article. ...

Seen yesterday at Union Square, pre-game pep rally in prep for The Big Game on Saturday… The Cal vs. Stanford rivalry is the only college rivalry that is actually based on social ideology. And by ideology, I don’t mean the traditional left/right variety. Stanford is a school next to a mall and some golf courses. The faculty is populated by cheerful well-to-do authority figures who want you to be like them. They serve as your ...
