Around 2:00am this morning, I lost one of my cousins, Brent. He was struck by a car while walking home from his brother's house. He left behind his mom and dad, brother, sister-in-law, neice, and countless cousins. Like all of us, he had his share of problems, but had some amazing qualities as well. He graduated at the top of his class with a degree in x-ray technology. At his graduation, we were all so ...

Ryan Brenizer has added a photo to the pool: Some people wanted more passion in this photo from Emily and Jeffrey's engagement. Well, they got married, and boy did they bring on the passion. This s the product of 17 shots stitched together, producing a frame something like a 50mm f/0.8 would. Technique explained here.

I was thinking about you and my long drive to Northern California this week to celebrate Thanksgiving with family. And then I thought that if you’re like me, you probably like to maximize your time when you travel too. So, since one of my favorite things to do on trips is to listen to audiobooks, I thought it would be cool to give the faithful a PRE-THANKSGIVING SALE and offer my Audiobook for HALF-PRICE. Yup, ...

Bosque Beauty Slide Show by Scott Bourne from Scott Bourne on Vimeo. I recently came across Animoto. It’s a platform for turning photos and music into professional videos. In other words, you use it to make cool slideshows. The product uses something called “Cinematic Artificial Intelligence” to analyze the music and photos selected by the photographer. Matching things like tempo, beat, climactic music events, the program automates the process of animation. The service launched in ...

Photo by Scott Bourne I am frankly shocked to learn that most photographers don’t really have a clue when it comes to their rights under Copyright law. I am NOT shocked to learn that most of the online community is equally ill-informed. To help set the record straight, I am publishing the information that I personally rely on when making decisions about Copyright. I am not giving legal advice. I am sharing the information that ...

I take a lot of photos -- I'm on pace to have taken more than 150,000 photos in 2008. Not bad, since I'm not a sports-shooter and very rarely mash down the shutter button for continuous shooting. The good news of the digital era is that I didn't have to spring for more than 4,000 rolls of film. The bad news is that I have to process each of these photos myself. As you might ...

Since we moved to Orange County from Santa Barbara a few years back, we’ve had the privilege of getting to know a lot of wonderful families. The Root’s in particular have been close to my heart for a number of reasons. First, they are one of the pioneer families at our church who sacrificed much for the sake of being part of a movement that is changing the world. Second, Lauri’s husband Doug died a ...

Here’s what I’m curious about: 1. Nortel is planning on cutting 1,300 positions but despite announcing plans on Sept. 17 that it was restructuring, no one seems to have lost their job yet other than four senior executives: John Roese, Lauren Flaherty, Dietmar Wendt and Bill Nelson. It seems like a bizarre way to conduct business. Imagine if you’re a hard-working Nortel employee, and you have no idea whether you’re going to be among the ...

Have you ever said, "If only I knew that God wanted me to do this or that," or "If only God would speak to me, then I would do it!"? While it sounds logical and spiritual, it isn't necessarily true, as we will see in this Memo. Who do you think I will pick from the Bible as a character to prove this point? If you guessed Gideon, you guessed correctly. IT CAN'T BE ME!In ...

Ryan Brenizer posted a photo: Better bigger, Flickr is oversharpening this one. When Jerry proposed to Stefanie, she had to sit down to hyperventilate on this very bench. Last night, I had the honor of photographing the wedding of two long-time friends, Jerry and Stefanie. It was fantastic to see them tie the knot -- and quite funny to see the faces of the relatives when the photographer put down his camera to do some ...

Found this door on my meanderings in Germany. Of course it raises questions of originality when the painting was done by someone else. Arguably the painter didn't anticipate the passage of time and the stripping of paint especially noticeable in the dark areas but really, is that enough? I console myself with the knowledge that photographers have been shooting graffiti for years. Ansel himself was known to do it as was Walker Evans and many ...
