General Motors out of the Oscars? Don't worry ABC; just consider TV marketers' strong belief in the current state of big-event TV. As we have just seen with the Olympics this year -- and with the Super Bowl earlier this season. which garnered the second biggest TV viewership of all time for a single event -- network TV is still pretty healthy, especially with big events.

The new metric for out-of-home video viewing is a crucial step in making the medium more accessible to media planners and advertisers, a number of execs working in the out-of-home space recently agreed. They also said out-of-home networks need to go beyond the common metric, building their own custom measurements (in partnership with third-party research firms like Nielsen and Arbitron) to highlight the particular qualities of their venues and delivery.

Sports is bucking the downward ratings trends in television. The indisputable success of NBC’s broadcast of the Beijing Olympics cements strong upticks around the dial for major sporting events and makes 2008 a contender to be one of the strongest years ever for sports television. That’s helping networks that air athletic contests build and package audiences that are more immune to the havoc wreaked by digital video recorders on other genres of programming. Among the ...

NEW YORK When Coca-Cola first introduced its "My Coke Rewards" program in 2006, the global soft drink marketer used relatively little direct response TV advertising to peddle its products. But last year Coke significantly boosted its DRTV advertising to promote the rewards program, which steers consumers to a Web site where they can enter codes collected from purchased Coke products to exchange for free merchandise.

Every day, there are more and more great services to investigate in the world of social media. Each one breaks new ground in terms of features, focus or user interface. There are many different sites that target general social networking, some are for business, some are for dating, some are for microblogging, and others for service aggregation. And there will be many more. While some are calling for a pause in the innovation, somewhat fatigued ...

Earlier this week in a post comparing real estate sites Trulia and Zillow, I suggested that the most important success factor for these sites is how comprehensive they are. The more listings the better because home buyers want to go to one place to find every home on the market. They want a single dashboard from which they can filter down the choices. But just how comprehensive are these sites, and how accurate are their ...
