There is a rather active anti-database movement afoot these days. I initially chalked this up to the same “XML is going to replace databases” craziness that I heard back in the 90s but you can’t argue with the successes that some Web 2.0 companies have had going off traditional RDBMS architectures. I still think it’s far too early in the game to declare SQL dead, or really even in trouble, but it’s an interesting topic ...

Many WordPress users know the wp-config.php file as the key to the WordPress database. It is where you set the database name, username, password, and location. You know the one: The wp-config.php file contains the information required for WordPress to connect to the database But what many users don’t know is that the wp-config.php file may be used to specify a wide variety of configurational settings, enabling you to improve the functionality, performance, and security ...

What’s the first rule of Stack Overflow Club? You don’t talk about Stack Overflow on Stack Overflow. We have this policy not because we are jerks (or at least, not just because we are jerks) but because we believe meta-discussion kind of gets in the way. As the faq explains:Also, try to refrain from asking questions about Stack Overflow itself unless you absolutely, positively have to. Most programmers don’t come here to learn about the intricacies of ...

Robots may be impressive and occasionally frightening things that will some day rule our lives and societies, but right now they're rather co-dependent, unable to even recharge themselves without a helping hand. The latest from robo-startup Willow Garage is different, a bot called PR2 that's capable of maneuvering through a crowded office, opening (non-locked) doors, and pilfering a little taste of that good, good, alternating current juice. What's more, he's sensitive to your time constraints, ...

Not only can you use it to dump pictures off your digital camera, but you can use it as a boot disk if need be. The article also reveals: You can use the thinner MultiMediaCards with the SD slot. Cards that have a thickness or ...

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPod Family, iPhoneHere at TUAW central, we fell into a debate last night about the merits and tradeoffs of MiFi and the iPhone. If you haven't heard of MiFi, it's a portable EV-DO router from Verizon. For $149 for the equipment (there's a $50 rebate), and for $60/month, you get up to 5GB of WiFi based data that you can tether and share. The MiFi has a fairly limited WiFi ...

Whoa. Less than a month ago, we announced first Stack Overflow DevDays and opened registration to 300 people in each of five cities. Well, that sold out pretty quickly. Ryan Carson, who is taking care of all the conference logistics, was pretty sure we’d be able to book larger event spaces, so we allowed even more people to register... we’ve got 2388 people booked worldwide so far, including over 800 in London, but it’s clear ...
