Here’s a brief Ruby scriptone that demos Shoes’ events and animationand it’s been injected into an EXE and a DMG: accordion.exe84.0 KBaccordion.dmg43.4 KB These are web installers. Using native calls on each platform, they’ll install Shoes if no Shoes is found on the system. (If you already have Shoes installed, though, it won’t update for you.) Not a big deal, not worth mentioning really. Installers. But, hold up. What if I told you that Shoes ...

For the past two years or so, there has been an increasing meme across the developer blogosphere encouraging the application of the polyglot methodology. For those of you who have been living under a rock, the idea behind polyglot programming is that each section of a given project should use whatever language happens to be most applicable to the problem in question. This makes for a great topic for arm-chair bloggers, leading to endless pontification ...

If you've been using my Subversion Automation tool (SVA) to manage your Subversion repositories, and you're also thinking about moving to Git, I've got good news. As long as you have git-svn installed, I have a script and some notes that make it very easy to convert your project from Subversion to a Git repository, with full history, experimental branches, and release tags included. When Giles tagged me with one of these blog memes that's been going around, I couldn't bring myself to continue its progression since I generally don't find them all that interesting—it takes a remarkable writer to make a good post out of one, but a remarkable writer probably could have found something interesting to write about without the meme, while with a less-than-remarkable writer I'd find a the regular fare (usually a post about code) ...

This weekend’s melee at Triangle Town Center in north Raleigh – a reportedly gang-related brawl involving as many as 200 youth – left, thankfully, few injuries. One boy was stabbed in the buttocks by a butterfly knife; a Raleigh law enforcement officer received lacerations and had to be treated at a Raleigh hospital. To me, though, the last cuts and bruises may well be the dark underbelly of class and race that the fight exposed. ...

Autumn is a framework by Tim Morgan that makes it easy to develop powerful IRC (Internet Relay Chat) bots with Ruby. Version 3, a significant update, was launched just a week ago. The code is available on Github, so it's ready to fork, tweak and work on to your heart's content. An instance of an "Autumn app" is laid out in a similar way to a Rails app. There are config, doc, script, libs, tmp, ...

Obama’s willingness to engage the Christian Right directly in biblical terms has caused a lot of excitement among theologians and bloggers (and blogger-theologians). When the Democratic nominee can hold his own with James Dobson on the Bible, that’s a man-bites-dog story. First, here’s a reminder of what Obama said recently in his engagement with Dobson. Then below, a post by popular born-again writer and theologian Scott McKnight. And this is a great example of the ...

Following a story on BBC News that fellow blogger Sokari of BlackLooks had already picked up earlier in June (as well as Alison), our reader Zeno dropped in an e-mail, asking if we knew more about keyhole gardens. Keyhole gardens? Actually, I had heard about those Folkewall installations in Gabarone, Botswana the other day that are used for greywater recycling, but keyhole gardens were indeed quite new to me. Guess this also shows how many ...
