An anonymous reader writes "After having my university degrees, a couple of IT certifications, and over ten years of work experience in the industry, with 2-4 years of verifiable employment with each employer, working with a wide range of technologies, is it reasonable to ask me to take some test on a job interview? The same companies don't ask other professionals (lawyer, accountant, sales, HR, etc.) to submit to any kind of in-house tests when ...

Interesting questions, particularly the "real professionals" comment - however, I do think programmers need to be tested to verify that they're quality and experience. Medicine and Law have other methods of verification that programming tends to lack as a field.

theodp writes "Instead of laying off techies who directly help users, Robert X. Cringely argues that the best place to cut IT organizations is at the top. One of the great problems in IT management, Cringely says, is that the big bosses typically haven't a clue what is happening, what needs to happen, and what it all should cost. He issues the following challenge: 'If you are managing an IT shop and can't write the ...

Filed under: HDTV, Home Entertainment No surprises here, but AT&T is doing the right thing by getting official with its Total Home DVR -- which we've been expecting for like, ever. A number of loyal U-verse users received word of the change last week, but now the provider is rolling the software out to the Bay Area at no additional charge; as for everyone else, expect to receive it before 2009 dawns. So, what's so ...

Bernard Pollard is not a well-liked man in New England and by crestfallen fantasy owners all across the country who watched their seasons disintegrate in an instant. (Darren Rovell says the Brady effect on Fantasy Football will cost some owners $150 million. Really. ) Pollard insists the left knee-knock he leveled Brady with early in yesterday's game was not intentional, no sir, not me, not a dirty player. Not "Bonecrusher." But the man is contrite. ...

The NFL season has officially started, so it's time to fucking finish the impassioned season previews from various writers, bloggers, diehard fans, cooks, TV personalities, and numerous other walks of life whom consider football the only sport worth watching. Clearly, these previews will be running until, oh, the first round of the wild card playoffs based on how quickly they've been coming in. So, for the next few days, expect a lot of these. Actually, ...

That's his promise. In his new role as the Bears starting quarterback, Orton has sworn that he's a all business and that his hard-partying days of internet lore are long behind him. He's a new man — a married man — who won't give his teammates a reason to question his leadership abilities this time around. He's more mature and refined; he's a man with a plan, a 50-cent razor and 10-cent arm. But he's ...

Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) is now widely known to have twice lied about her strong support for the “Bridge to Nowhere.” Less well-known is her support for “another massive, widely criticized transportation project” dubbed the “Road to Nowhere.” The Huffington Post’s Sam Stein reports: The “Road To Nowhere” is a $375 million “mega-project” designed to connect Juneau to the towns of Haines and Skagway via 50 miles of new road. To some, the odds against IT unions are long, in large part because the 'lone gunman' ...

Unionizing is not the answer, IMO the nature of most of the IT guys I know is why they are working the long hours and the like. They just don't want to give up any control and that means they have to work more! A union atmosphere isn't the type I think is conducive to an IT department!

During his RNC speech tonight, Mike Huckabee declared that Sarah Palin “got more votes running for Mayor of Wasilla than Joe Biden got running for President of the United States.” After his speech, MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann pointed out that this was a lie, since Biden received more than 30,000 votes in the primaries, while Palin received 616 votes — to her opponent’s 413 — in her 1998 bid: OLBERMANN: Biden got 15,000 votes in Florida, ...

Talk about hypocrites. The Republicans carefully orchestrated this media buzz about Palin and now are playing the hurt feminists who are just standing up for Sarah. Republican women leaders Wednesday leapt to the defense of under fire vice-presidential pick Sarah Palin, saying she had been the victim of unfair and sexist attacks. They charged that Palin, a 44-year-old mother of five named as Senator John McCain’s wildcard running mate, faced the same dilemma as ex-first ...
