Justin Sullivan of Getty Images captures a superb slice of history at the Democratic National Convention in Denver: Moe Spencer, a delegate from Washington, being comforted by a colleague after the nomination of Barack Obama as the party’s candidate for the November presidential elections. Besides the symbolism of being in the midst of a man who could be America’s first black president, Obama’s 46-minute acceptance speech apparently left many in the 80,000 audience teary-eyed with ...

ASHWINI A. writes from Bangalore: Early this morning, a Delhi-datelined news item in Deccan Herald made me pull my hair out in wonderment: the Supreme Court of India had ruled that nobody had the licence to rape a woman who appeared to be promiscuous in her sexual behaviour. Yes, nobody has the licence to rape a woman who appears to be promiscuous in her sexual behaviour. It might seem common sensical, but the beauty of ...

Amitabh Bachchan in The Telegraph, Calcutta: London, August 22: India should no longer be dismissed as a “Third World” country but should henceforth be given due respect as a “developed nation”, Amitabh Bachchan, said in London yesterday…. No doubt, economists will protest that India combines extremes of wealth and poverty, but Bachchan stated: “India today is a recognised force and I hope to see that India is no longer referred to as a Third World ...

It is in many newspapers, I read it in the Indian Express. Saina Nehwal and Pullela Gopichand go to meet M.S. Gill, the country's sports minister. Gill recognizes Saina (she lost in the quarter finals in the badminton singles event at Beijing). Then he turns to ask Gopichand- "Who are you?"While Gill greeted Saina heartily, he could not recognise Gopichand who was standing next to Saina and asked him who he was. “Who are you?” ...

Bibek Debroy in The Indian Express: “We may be proud of our glorious past and our glorious future. But we aren’t yet proud of the present, because being proud of the present is tantamount to being proud of the system. We think we are what we are, in spite of the system. We owe nothing to the system. If we have done well, and are relatively rich, we have learnt to manipulate the system, because ...

Platforms like WordPress and Movable Type democratized the process of self-publishing. With these tools, everyone could be a publisher and it didn't require advanced technical expertise to do so. Now, the next revolution for publishing is to bring that same ease of creation to the process of building social networks. With Six Apart's recent release of Movable Type 4.2, that revolution has begun. The new release provides DIY tools for building your own social networking ...

"So where is WordPress's social network? It's still under development. Unlike MT, social networking with not be a feature of WordPress - instead, the WordPress MU core is being used to build out a next-gen publishing platform called BuddyPress . Essentially, BuddyPress is a set of WordPress MU specific plugins, each adding a new feature. When complete, BuddyPress will offer extended user profiles, private messaging, groups, friends, status updates, albums, as well as something called ...

Response to - If you can’t beat them, learn Kannada There can’t be more than a handful of north-indians actually putting an effort to learn the language of the southies. If they are made to swear in the native language, or if they are forced to learn the native language then its only because they have forced it on themselves. So whats the big deal in Delhiites and Punjabis learning the local language. That’s not ...

Twitter isn’t for everyone, and you may have dismissed the service a long time ago. But regardless of your own use, it’s hard to dismiss the phenomenon itself and the passion of so many that has built up around it. No matter how long the outage du jour, Twitter users continue to stay attached to the service despite an ever-changing backdrop of alternatives. Blogging isn’t for everyone either. But unlike blogging, Twitter enjoys a far ...
