What kind of tax policy will we get if John McCain is elected President? He says he wants to make the Bush tax cuts permanent. But is he likely to deliver that outcome in the face of a likely Democratic Congress? The top income tax rate is now 35 percent. According to the betting at Intrade, the probability that the top income tax rate in 2011 exceeds 38 percent is 0.87. Call this P(tax hike).Barack Obama ...

(2008-09-07) — Sen. Barack Obama told ABC’s George Stephanopolous on Sunday that he considered joining the military when he left high school in 1979, but declined when he learned that the Vietnam War had ended some four years earlier, and that the first Persian Gulf War wouldn’t start for another 11 years. Sen. Obama’s opponent, Sen. John McCain was shot down, captured, and repeatedly tortured in Vietnam during more than five years as a prisoner ...

I'd like to repeat how surprised I am at the size of the gains from drilling, or at least what appears to be the best current estimate of such gains. What happened is simple. I read people writing "Price won't go down much from drilling, therefore the gains are small," in various ways. That is a non sequitur because there is producer surplus as well! I committed a simple error. Yet again. And I committed ...

Enable drilling, use huge tax surplus to invest in alternative/green energy. I like it. I'm with Tyler, I had a knee jerk reaction of distrust. I'm too cynical for my own good sometimes!

Matthew Kotchen and Nicholas Burger have done a real study of the economics of drilling in ANWR (ungated, published version here). Ben Muse reports some of their results:What are the benefits? Kotchen and Burger estimated that the oil had a value of $374 billion (writing in July 2007, they assumed a long-term price of $53/barrel), but that it would cost $123 billion to extract and market. The net return of $254 billion is divided consists ...

I'm not sure the L-T price is above $100. I think that BP, Shell, and others still use $50 for evaluation purposes. Correct me if you know.

Sara Murray reports on the presidential race. Community organizers weren’t among those cheering on Sarah Palin’s speech last night to the Republican National Convention. In fact, they’re peeved. “I don’t even know where to begin with what upset us,” says Gabe Gonzalez, the director of Campaign for Community Values, which works with community organizers and groups of them across the country as part of the Center for Community Change. The shot to the jugular, of ...

Laura Meckler reports from St. Paul, Minn., on the Republican convention. When her moment on the national stage arrived last night, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had more to contend with than just nerves. The TelePrompTer that fed her the speech malfunctioned, scrolling too quickly through applause, two senior Republican officials said today. The result was that the first two lines of each paragraph had already scrolled up by the time she was to deliver them, ...

Halfway through Sarah Palin's speech tonight at the RNC, people following the speech noticed she was deviating from the prepared text. According to sources close to the McCain campaign, the teleprompter continued scrolling during applause breaks. As a result, half way through the speech, the speech had scrolled significantly from where Governor Palin was in the speech. The malfunction also occurred during Rudy Giuliani's speech, explaining his significant deviations from his speech. [see the update ...

(2008-08-31) — Delegates to the Republican National Convention will have a sharply curtailed schedule of events Monday because, in the waning months of his presidency, George W. Bush has apparently lost the ability to control the intensity and paths of hurricanes. With Category 4 Hurricane Gustav bearing down on the Gulf Coast, President Bush can do little more than monitor the situation and coordinate the response from Washington D.C.. Just three years ago, at the ...
