Whoa, the hate mail has been flowing fast and furious tonight. Pat Phelan, founder of MaxRoam, says that today my shine came off. Loic Le Meur, founder of Seesmic, says that it’s easy to knock startups when I’ve never started one. I’ve never been the top dog, but the store I helped manage in the 1980s was a startup. Fawcette Technical Publications was only eight when I was hired and grew to about 200. Winnov ...

Last evening, we asked what are the costs and consequences, as well as the market reaction to, the imminent bailout of Fannie Mae (FNM) and Freddie Mac (FRE). Your responses were inspired and informative. (For a brief history of the GSEs, see this earlier commentary). This morning, its page one news. Here's what the major papers are suggesting is the likely outcome: • Conservatorship: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will be brought under government control; ...

Earlier this week, when I announced the promotion of Paul Walborsky to CEO of Giga Omni Media, the company I started in 2006, it was part of a plan that was hatched long before I returned to work after my health scare. That plan was to make the company less reliant on any one person — notably myself. At the same time that I hired Paul to run the business side of things back in ...

Imagine what would happen if GM and Ford collaborated to invest in the components and architecture of a better public transport network -- and then licensed it for free to cities, states, and countries. Imagine what would happen if pharma players directly invested in better hospitals and clinics -- instead of in trying to own the relationship with doctors, and furiously outspending one another when marketing blockbusters. Imagine what would happen if Wal-Mart invested in ...

I think that this is apples and organges. There is a huge cost, relative to open-source software development, to building public infrastructure such as roads and squares. Further, the benefits to Wal-Mart and P&G from such investments are questionable at best. Cars run on roads, and people like public squares, but the analogy doesn't hold for this new browser because it is enabling fundamentally new capabilities for GOOG. That is, control of its own destiny for web-based apps like GMAIL, GCAL, etc and the basis to compete with MSFT in the OS layer. Many future developers are going to skip the Windows layer and develop apps directly for the web on the back of Chrome and efforts like it.

The least surprising thing about Google’s Chrome browser announcement was the reaction from most of the media that this was an attack on Microsoft. Google founders Sergey and Larry were both present at the press event, with Page apparently the more engaged on a regular basis with the project for the last two years. But Brin took most of the strategic questions and painted a different picture from the notion that the browser was a ...

HarperCollins, the book publishing company owned by News Corp (NYSE: NWS). is launching its books social networking site called Authonomy (finally, a great name for a relevant social network), with the intent of using it to discover new and unpublished authors, and hoping the community will vet these manuscripts and ideas. The site is launching in UK for now, after three months of private testing...it was announced late last year. While HarperCollins is not promising ...

It's been nearly a decade or so since the rise of mobile phones began to impact the payphone industry -- and we've seen all sorts of creative attempts to save payphone booths in one form or another -- from turning them into music download stations or WiFi hotspots. Then, there's the idea of simply changing phone booths into places for mobile phone callers to go, so they're not quite so annoying, talking on the phone ...

I’ve been reading all sorts of starry eyed accounts as to how the new browser from Google dubbed Chrome is going to kill Windows. As someone who is absolutely dazzled by Chrome, I’m here to tell you that it isn’t the case. Certainly, we may be looking at one of the best browsers to date, particularly for the Windows platform. It’s sleek not just in appearance, but load times and memory usage. That said, it’s ...

On today, this day of endless blogging / talking (and hopefully downloading) of Google Chrome, I thought I'd go retro and write about my renewed hunt for the 4GL. But first, a little context on how this came about. This summer I spent some time playing around with Google AppEngine to try and understand it better. It didn't take long before I realized I needed to really understand how to program in Python to do ...

The mid-day charge. It’s a term that iPhone 3G owners are getting to know all too well. You unplug the device in the morning then set out on your day, only to find that sometime in the afternoon you need to recharge the battery again. Many complain about this annoyance and wonder why Apple made a device with such a limitation. But let’s be honest. The real reason that the iPhone 3G’s battery drains so ...

Walt Mossberg has been playing with Google's "Chrome" browser for a week longer than you have. What does he think? Chrome's not as good as IE8 but way better than Apple's crappy Safari. And neither Chrome nor IE8 can hold a candle to the awesome Firefox 3. (Did Walt actually say that? Of course not. He has relationships to protect. But that's the impression we got after reading his review): Chrome is a smart, innovative ...

One of the things that has amused me about the technology blogosphere is the fact that some of its most popular A-listers and B-listers aren’t even legitimate “techies.” From the misuse of terminology to downright mischaracterizations and misinterpretations, the technology blogosphere has no shortage of technology enthusiasts masquerading as technology experts. TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington is the perfect [...]
