Hank Williams points out that the front page of the Angelsoft website is really great. For those that don't know Angelsoft is a free web service that many angel investors use to manage their deal flow. We've looked into using it to manage our deal flow and I wish we could use it, but we don't currently. Hank and his commenters mostly focus on the twittervision style map on the front page that shows the ...

A journalist friend of mine once said about Google "they are a freak of a company, the best advertising business ever built is funding the largest collection of mad scientists ever assembled". I love that description of Google and have used it many times. But it suggests that Google is chaos and I don't think that is true at all. Google is building a collection of web apps, like gmail, gcal, and google docs, that ...

The radical right wing blogs are predictably complaining and slinging mud at people who pass on stories about McCain's choice for vice-president, but that shouldn't change a thing. Latest: The Washington Post reports she led a 527 founded by indicted-for-corruption Senator Ted Stevens. So much for her being a reformer and maverick. The current First Lady made some menacing remarks probably aimed at the press, indicating that she wants this VP candidate to be treated ...

Last week, while the media focused almost obsessively on the DNC's spectacle in Denver, the country's most influential conservatives met quietly at a hotel in downtown Minneapolis to get to know Sarah Palin. The assembled were members of the Council for National Policy, an ultra-secretive cabal that networks wealthy right-wing donors together with top conservative operatives to plan long-term movement strategy. CNP members have included Tony Perkins, James Dobson, Grover Norquist, Tim LaHaye and Paul ...

I've been noticing a trend lately that certain web services are starting to cater to both the publisher and the reader. And I think this is an important direction for a host of reasons. You have to build a service with the user/reader in mind or you won't get any uptake. But if you can't engage the content creator in your service, you'll lose something important. When publishers start paying attention to a service, they ...

Guinness World Records announced that China’s Bao Xi Shun (7 feet 8.95 inches) has recaptured the record as the world’s Tallest Living Man from Ukrainian Leonid Stadnyk (8 feet 5.5 inch). Guidelines for the title were amended earlier this year, in order to ensure the highest level of accuracy in determining this category. All contenders to the Tallest Living Man title must now be measured in person by an official Guinness World Records adjudicator. As ...

Blogger has announced a new “following” feature that enables members to list themselves as fans of other members’ blogs. By following a set of blogs, your username and avatar will not only show up among other followers in a MyBlogLog-like gadget that can be placed in the sidebars of these blogs. You can also view the latest posts from the blogs you follow in a special feed reader on the Blogger dashboard. Since Blogger is ...

1. It certainly was creative and thought-stimulating. 2. However... it shows McCain thought he was losing to Obama and needed to do something bold that would stir things up. And he certainly did that. 3. However... no matter how well they vetted her, even if nothing terrible shows up, she has no experience in the world, and virtually no experience in the United States. What does she know about American cities? Our industries and businesses? ...

As a woman, I'm offended by John McCain's decision to select Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. It is clear that the decision is primarily driven by politics, by the belief that to get Hillary's supporters, all you need to do is play the gender card. I respect what Palin has done in Alaska in terms of calling out corrupt politics, and I'm sure that McCain does too. But being a whistleblower and ...

danah boyd: "Our sisters, mothers, and grandmothers did not fight for women's rights only to have a woman toted around as an accessory in federal politics. I am confident that Palin is a smart, compassionate, and capable person, but she lacks the qualifications, experience, and long-term thinking to be president. This isn't about DC. She hasn't even done anything worth mentioning in Alaska. For McCain to tap her for this position is just outright offensive."

I am an architect and have been working with programs like Photoshop for years, but Spoonflower really opened up a new world for me: fabric design. It's a service that let's you upload an image to a web site and the company prints the design as a pattern on 100% cotton fabric. Their customer service is great, and I think the fabric is reasonably-priced: it costs $18/yard, not counting shipping, and an individual 8x8-inch swatch ...

Just as the Olympics was a spectacle of physical prowess, the Democratic National Convention has been a spectacle of political aspiration. As best demonstrated by my preference for Fantasy Congress over Fantasy Football, I'm much more of a sucker for the political. And this week's convention was most definitely a 10.0. Each speech addressed a different American anxiety around Obama's candidacy. Michelle Obama began by taking back the idea that Republicans have a stranglehold on ...

Think Twitter for all comments on the web. They are not like the recent barrage of startups focusing on cleaning up the comment experience on blogs - see Disqus, SezWho, JS-Kit, etc. Blogs ...

Google's (GOOG) latest update to its search engine: It's "Google Suggest" feature, which tries to save you time by guessing what you're trying to search for, is now turned on by default. It's not as creepy as it looks -- suggestions are based on search popularity among all Google users, not just you. But it does tell us a lot about what Google users are looking for most often, like how to get rich, procreate, ...
