How to “Peel” Hard-Boiled Eggs Without Peeling (84)

Don't hide or disable menu items (60)
on Joel on Software (98) permalinkA long time ago, it became fashionable, even recommended, to disable menu items when they could not be used. Don't do this. Users see the disabled menu item that they want to click on, and are left entirely without a clue of what they are supposed to do to get the menu item to work. Instead, leave the menu item enabled. Open Wireless and the Illusion of Security (59)
on Coding Horror (940) permalinkBruce Schneier is something of a legend in the computer security community. He's the author of the classic, oft-cited 1994 book Applied Cryptography, as well as several well-known cryptography algorithms. The cheeky Norris-esque design above is a reference to the actor names commonly used in examples of shared secret key exchange. What I find most interesting about Bruce, however, is that he has moved beyond treating computer security as a problem that can be solved ...Shared by Alan Dean (257) Alec Resnick (107) Andy (6) Anthony (170) Appu (29) Bill (85) Bojan (3) Bramha (17) Brandon (77) Carl (58) chrishawn (45) Drew (62) Filippo (21) Ian (17) Jack (41) Jacob W (106) jerobins (100) jezarnold (30) Kenneth LeFebvre (25) kev (21) kfc (111) lishevita (28) mathewbutler (41) Matt (23) Matt Blodgett (62) Michael (69) michael.twofish (37) Mike F (2180) MikeD (181) mndoci (242) Morton Fox (349) Nikki (305) Nikpay (13) Nuno (6) OGeleia (13) olive (21) Omnipresence@wired® (5) Pat (53) Peter (136) Phillie Casablanca (50) Raanan Avidor (37) Razzu (65) rene (102) Rich (20) Roy (35) Sai Ram Kunala (23) Scott (39) Sebastian (34) shivanand (35) Srinvard (280) Sumesh (243) Tim (214) TiTi (357) Todd (41) weloytty (1) Yuvi (252) Zahra HB (479) Zane Shelby (13) 狮子真好吃啊 (178)Contribute comment

What's The True Cost Of Power? [The Cost Of Power] (5)
on Jalopnik (458) permalinkThe term "horsepower" was coined by James Watt almost purely as a marketing scheme for his steam engine. Horsepower is actually based on another standard, but foot-pounds-per-minute doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. It's now the benchmark for power, though it isn't always indicative of a car's performance. Weight, torque and other factors play just as big a role. Nevertheless, a car's horsepower is still one of the first facts we want to know; it's ...Contribute comment

Revisiting the Black Sunday Hack (92)

OpenID: Does The World Really Need Yet Another Username and Password? (61)

How do I, as someone who'd like to allow OpenID logins on my site, verify that the providers are legitimate?

Why Microsoft will buy Facebook and keep it closed (170)
