Autopilots are export controlled by the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), which is why it's very difficult for US manufacturers to sell abroad without incredibly complicated guarantees about security procedures put in place by the buyer. That doesn't just apply to autopilot hardware; it also covers autopilot software, groundstation code and other technology in digital form such as schematics. And "export" doesn't just mean physically sending boxes abroad, it also covers "export by electronic ...

Last week I ported my geonames application to GeoDjango and I've ended up reverting all the changes and turning back to custom SQL. First, let me tell you what the geonames database is about. It contains almost 7 million geographical places and you can download the full dump under a Creative Commons BY-SA license. The first problem I encountered was importing the dataset. Since I need to do additional processing in their database dumps, I ...

Foo camp attendee Ben Black alerted me to Adhearsion, a framework for developing applications in the VoIP space. Think of it as a Ruby on Rails for telephony. Developed by Jay Philllps who got frustrated by the slow uptake of Asterisk. Adhearsion is written in Ruby and lets those even without any VoIP experience write applications intuitively and productively or simply download and use a pre-written solution. With the framework extension architecture, VoIP functionality can ...

Today FortiusOne announced its acquisition of Mapufacture, the web's original geo-feed aggregator. FortiusOne is the creator of GeoCommons, a geo-data repository with analysis tools (Radar post). This acquisition brings Fortiusone both talent and the technology to handle third-party feeds. Mapufacture was created by Andrew Turner and Mikel Maron, two well-known geohackers. In addition to collaborating on Mapufacture they have also worked on the Mapstraction Javascript library (Radar post) and GeoPress, a mapping plugin for Wordpress ...

Before I read Bjørn Sandvik's post about semantic geospatial services, I didn't know there was an effort to build bridges from WS-* to the Semantic Web. More significantly, his post is a useful introduction to semantic web issues to GIS users who are more familiar with the concept of services than the concept of Web resources. The metadata in OGC service capability documents (abstract, keywords, etc) are inadequate for the purpose of machine reasoning, and ...

Wow. Radiohead’s new video is totally inspiring and impressive. And the best thing is, they provided all of the data for compiling the video in CSV format (since there were no images that were used in the video, just 3d data). Well, I brought the points for frame 1 into ArcMap, and got some pretty incredible visualizations. Here we have Thom Yorke in all his digital glory…

For the past year or so, people have been asking for us to hold a conference all about Django. Putting together a conference is an imense amount of work, so it took us a while to get the ball rolling. However, over the past couple of months we've found a few good volunteers who've taken on the task of planning a "DjangoCon," and now the dream is a reality! For the details, I'll turn this ...

I spent part of yesterday relocking, unbricking and upgrading my iPhone so that I could check out some of the new apps. After some trial and error, it worked (hint: you have to upgrade iTunes to 7.7 first!). I was curious which apps would use location (more than I expected) and whether or not I can make do without the iPhone 3G's GPS (I don't think I will upgrade immediately especially when weighed against 3G's ...

게임과 Location tracker.
정말 location은 수많은 인터넷의 정보들을 손에 잡히게 해주는 아주 신기한 정보이다. 인터넷을 안쓰던 사람들마저 끌어드릴수있게 만드는.

I spend a great deal of my time encouraging "enterprise people" to think more like "web people." Focus on adoption, use platforms to enable emergent capability, build the "generative enterprise," and that sort of thing. So, imagine my surprise when I saw the web acting a bit like the enterprise with the launch of Gnip. As the web moves toward a network of widespread transactional API's, each with it's own vocabulary, it is starting to ...

Last week's dramatic rescue of 15 hostages held by the guerrilla organization FARC was the result of months of intricate deception on the part of the Colombian government. At the center was a classic man-in-the-middle attack. In a man-in-the-middle attack, the attacker inserts himself between two communicating parties. Both believe they're talking to each other, and the attacker can delete or modify the communications at will. The Wall Street Journal reported how this gambit played ...

I'm starting to notice a problematic pattern in Django: some components are not extensible at all. There's no problem when you are using it in the same way the framework developers intended, but when you want to do something which deviates from the Django standard, you're screwed. That's what happened to me yesterday. I wanted to add a RSS feed for public notes at byNotes, featuring GeoRSS information, but as far as I'm concerned Django ...

Cool news from Microsoft: its Google Earth competitor, Virtual Earth, is now accepting user-generated aerial imagery. Unlike Google Earth, where your own data can only be superimposed on the "real" Google Earth data, and people will only see it if they use a special URL, Microsoft is offering to integrate user-submitted data in the core data set. For DIY Drones and our RC aerial photography cousins, that means a great way to share our imagery ...
