Guinness World Records announced that China’s Bao Xi Shun (7 feet 8.95 inches) has recaptured the record as the world’s Tallest Living Man from Ukrainian Leonid Stadnyk (8 feet 5.5 inch). Guidelines for the title were amended earlier this year, in order to ensure the highest level of accuracy in determining this category. All contenders to the Tallest Living Man title must now be measured in person by an official Guinness World Records adjudicator. As ...

As much as I hate what the US is doing with regard to security and privacy (or the lack of) and scaring people, I think the UK is doing an even scarier job. Their posters and police worry me, I'm afraid they'll continue on their current path, creating a true Big Brother society, something similar to V for Vendetta.

This is nice: It won’t last — Stephenie Meyer fans, outraged that their leader was deposed even momentarily, will no doubt purchase Kindles for the sole purpose of buying electronic copies of The Host, thus putting her back on top. Also, I expect to be visited by a teenage vampire death squad any second now. But until I’m turned into a bloodless husk (or, alternately, a carrier for an alien intelligence — you get options ...

The Kindle is a lousy idea. No one will read a book that way. The Kindle is late. Amazon has no clue how to launch a product. The Kindle is poorly designed. See, we told you. The Kindle's pricing model hurts book publishers. It will never be adopted by them. The Kindle is pretty cool. Non-techies like it. The Kindle is sold out. Amazon doesn't know how to produce a product. The Kindle is selling ...

Shai Agassi looks up and down the massive rectangular table in the Ritz-Carlton ballroom and begins to worry. He knows he's out of his league here. For the last day and a half, he's been listening to an elite corps of Israeli and US politicians, businesspeople, and intellectuals debate the state of the world. Agassi is just one of 60 sequestered in a Washington, DC, hotel for a conference run by the Saban Center for ...

I spent a week in King's Canyon/Sequoia National Park a couple weeks ago (during the new moon), and came away with two surprisingy amazing time-lapse movies of the Milky Way galaxy traveling across the night sky. You may want to set your browser to full screen for best effect. (These are flash animations of sequential frames. See tech details below.)www.danheller.com/kings-canyon-star-trails-1www.danheller.com/kings-canyon-star-trails-2 Each exposure was 30 seconds at f2.8 at ISO 3200 (Canon 1DsMark3, EF 16-35mm f2.8L ...

This system, by students at the University of Washington, uses still photographs or one single frame of a video scene to automatically improve video. The improvements are amazing. Video might contain artifacts like overexposure and low-resolution imagery and this system takes cues from still images of the scene to bring almost the entire video up to photographic quality. Can’t wait for this to hit our local point and shoot - in maybe five years. Click ...

I was one of the allegedly three billion people watching the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics on TV, and I think I received the intended message: China is here, big time. The scope, precision and beauty of the production was, you will agree, astonishing. The distinguished director Zhang Yimou was given $300 million and full reign of his imagination, and perhaps some of his background in opera was also useful. The sheer size of ...

"Our Chicago mayor Richard M. Daley and his first lady, Maggie, were in the audience in the stadium. The city is making a bid for the 2016 Olympics. What was Daley thinking? How to compete with this ? He can forget about it. The ceremony was one of a kind, possibly never to be equaled." It was easily the best show I have ever seen. And I agree with Roger, it's going to be hard if not impossible to match it.
