If I was trapped in a pile of earthquake rubble, I'd do just about anything to get the hell out as soon as possible. But if this cilia-covered rescue snakebot squirmed it's way up my leg, I think the chances of heart failure might need to be factored in. It's called the Active Scope Camera, and it was conceived by researchers at Japan's Tohoku University, all of whom are clearly fans of War of the ...

[ Sunday, August 17; 8:00 am to 10:00 am. ] Watch about 125 Smart Cars (you know those funny little euro-cars that can barely fit two people and no luggage other than your wallet) rally down the windy bit of Lombard Street early on Saturday morning. The purpose of this meet is to rally together all of the smart cars in Northern California and have [...]

"The question is, who is the client? Is the adviser loyal to income from a foreign client, or is he loyal to the candidate he is working for now?" said James Thurber, a lobbying expert at American University. "It's dangerous if you're getting advice from people who are very close to countries on one side or another of a conflict."

missb writes "Brain tissue cultured from rats has controlled a wheeled robot around a lab, according to New Scientist this week. Researchers in the UK have harnessed signals from thousands of disembodied rat neurons, and manipulated them to get a robot to respond to instructions. The team at the University of Reading in the UK hope their research will help provide treatments for diseases like Alzheimer's and epilepsy."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

From the MAKE Flickr photo pool Macetech writes - Some speakers from the TechShop junk shelves held together with zip ties. I should actually wire this up and put LEDs inside too! :) - I'm fairly sure adding LEDs would make that a full-on 'party cube'. - Speaker Cube on Flickr From the pages of MAKE: MAKE:11, p.141 Ball of Sound - Subscribers—read this article now in your digital edition! The ElectraFlyer C is a carbon fiber-shelled mini plane that runs on electricity, and it also looks like a lot of fun. It's a mash-up of a commercially available glider body and a lightweight battery and motor/propeller assembly. It can fly for 90 to 120 minutes at up to 90MPH, and you can recharge it in about six hours from a regular 110 volt outlet for about 60 cents. Oh, and it's received its airworthiness ...
