Monitor110 recently shut down after raising $20m over three rounds. One of the co-founders wrote a portmortem of Monitor110, highlighting 7 mistakes that the company made: 1. The lack of a single, “the buck stops here” leader until too late in the game 2. No separation between the technology organization and the product organization 3. Too much PR, too early 4. Too much money 5. Not close enough to the customer 6. Slow to adapt ...

My friend Roger Ehrenberg has posted one of the most honest candid post mortems on a failed startup that I have ever seen from the leadership of the company. His company, Monitor 110, tried to use technology to surface investable information from the Internet. That is an incredibly difficult problem to solve and I have witnessed more than a few firms stub their toe on it. But it's the back story that Roger tells that ...

Typically I give a popular service around an hour to get its act together before posting about its downtime, but for the last 15 minutes or so my Twitter friend timeline has been lighting up with messages about Facebook being down. Being Friday and all, I figured why not have some fun with it. Twitter’s “fail whale” has become somewhat iconic, at least for those of us that use the site regularly and have become ...

Together with Tadayoshi Kohno and four of his students at the University of Washington, I have a new paper that breaks the deniable encryption feature of TrueCrypt version 5.1a. Basically, modern operating systems leak information like mad, making deniability a very difficult requirement to satisfy. ABSTRACT: We examine the security requirements for creating a Deniable File System (DFS), and the efficacy with which the TrueCrypt disk-encryption software meets those requirements. We find that the Windows ...

BREAKING NOW: Google is buying Russian contextual advertising company ZAO Begun for $140 million from UK-registered Rambler Media (many Russian firms now base themselves in the UK). Rambler owns 50.1 percent of Begun, so to secure the deal it is buying the remaining 49.9 percent stake from owner Bannatyne Limited and then selling the entire firm to Google. Rambler says it expects to net about $50 million from the deal which will finance its investments ...

In what seems to be a continuation of a never ending growth pattern by Meebo, it was widely reported this morning that they’re now going to be offering branded chat for social networks and online communities. They have a staggering list of volunteer launch partners as well, including DanceJam, Flixster, myYearbook, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group’s AddictingGames, Piczo, SparkArt, Sugar Publishing and Tagged. Sean and I had a great discussion with two of the three ...

How would you feel if you spent more than $1 million throwing a party and less than 100 or even 1,000 people showed up? That sinking feeling is spreading over corporate boardrooms around the nation, according to study performed by Ed Moran, a director at consulting mega-firm Deloitte. It may be all the rage, but are company-built social networks for customers to socialize in really smart? According to Wall St. Journal coverage of Moran's study, ...

"According to Wall St. Journal coverage of Moran's study, "Thirty-five percent of the [corporate] online communities studied have less than 100 members; less than 25% have more than 1,000 members - despite the fact that close to 60% of these businesses have spent over $1 million on their community projects." That means some of those $1 million parties probably had less than 100 attendees. Somebody got fired for that, right?"

"Social networks where a brand name product is what everyone rallies around are a dumb idea. They are stupid. No one should submit themselves to the indignity of creating a user profile and friend connections based on cola or cat litter." Indeed.

This might be a cutting argument against Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff's Groundswell. Then again, it made the fundamental assumption that you had a social technographics profile for your users BEFORE launching into a community strategy. Such research underscored the idea that a community solution is not for everyone and that there exists different solutions for each user.

The biggest lesson brands have to learn about social media and social marketing is that they have to give the user/customer the tools and motivation to make what THEY want out of the experience, not what the brand wants. The customer doesn't want to be branded to death and have marketing thrown in their face every step of the way, they want real interaction...something that is of value to them. The article makes a good point as well about the hassle of signing up for yet another account on a social network that really isn't about being social. Instead of expecting people to come to the brand the brand has to go to the people and that is more or less the meaning of social marketing in general. It's not about the brand or the product, it's about the customer.

It seems that this year Google's most popular web applications will work offline. After Google Reader and Google Docs, two other services will integrate with Gears. Andrew Fogg saw a preview of the integration at Google's offices and found that Gmail and Google Calendar will add offline support in approximately 6 weeks. In the past months, Google accidentally enabled the option in Google Calendar and some users saw the dialog illustrated below: "To view and edit ...

Despite the version name (9.5) that sounds like a tired iteration which begs for the real makeover (10.0), Opera Mobile 9.5 beta is actually an important milestone for the only other mobile browser that doesn’t suck. Last Saturday I had dinner at a hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurant in San Francisco's Richmond District. While it didn't look like much from the outside, the inside displayed a variety of Southeast Asian antiques and the walls were adorned with tapestries and bamboo. Our waiter was friendly and attentive and the phở was the best I've had in the city -- just the right amount of spice tempered with bean sprouts and fresh cilantro. When I ...
