Everyone keeps talking about Smule’s virtual lighter iPhone application called Sonic Lighter (iTunes link). I wasn’t impressed: there are no less than ten different virtual lighter apps in iTunes, which is what I’d call a saturated market. And it gets better, because Sonic Lighter costs $.99. The official Zippo iphone app is free. The basic functionality of all of these is similar - you have a virtual lighter, you light it and when you move ...

This is a very good example of using location-based technology to drive viral adoption. When you see people in your vicinity using something, you are more incline in doing same. Even for something as useless and crazy as a lighter app.

Nice! It's a great example of how superior design and implementation can even in what appears to be an saturated market with no real need (it's a ligher app!), result in revenue.

Yammer, the “Twitter for Business” company that won the Techcrunch50 conference best-in-show award earlier this month, launched an application programming interface last week. The API lets other companies build additional features. Today, a startup called Yammermail has used the API to launch a new feature I’ve been wanting, well, since before I heard about Yammer. It offers two ways to forward email to Yammer’s streaming feed of short messages to tell colleagues what you’re are ...

Very clever new input concept from one of the guys who brought you T9. I was just simulating this on my keyboard and it’s surprisingly easy to do. Of course I don’t have anything to measure my accuracy, but I think the concept is fascinating. Full story at CNET.

Labor Day recently passed. That means you may have received a shared photo album from a friend or relative. You know the type: It’s usually dozens (or hundreds) of shots of vacation fun. But you’re not into it. Now, it’s not that you don’t care; It’s fun to peek in and see what happened. But who wants to sort through a glut of 200 photos of someone else’s vacation (or baby photos or whatever)? What ...

...if you get one good shot on a roll of 36, you were doing good. That’s the ratio: 36:1. When you edit ruthlessly like that, you come out with great results. People think you’re better than you are. It’s not that you became a brilliant photographer, it’s just that you started exercising taste and restraint

Yes! Yes!!! I wish more people would adhere to this rule. I'm tired of wading through dozens, if not hundreds, of horrible shots on Facebook, Flickr, and Picasa. Only the best should be posted. You won't see me uploading all the shots I take straight into Facebook. I filter. Unfortunately, some friends of mine don't have that filter, and some not so flattering shots of my family and myself get on Facebook!

“It’s one of the biggest challenges in the digital age: When you can bombard people with everything, it’s tempting to do so. That’s why taste, restraint, and editing are so important. Sometimes it’s about throwing out the 35 bad shots and revelling in the one great shot.”

Tom points us to this fascinating concept. It's called the uncanny valley and it goes back as far as Freud. When you get too good at faking it, people freak out. We love cute dogs, cute monkeys, clairvoyant websites, smart voice mail systems. But we get totally wigged out when a website knows too much about us, when we start talking to a voice mail attendant like she's a real person or when a photo ...

For English subtitles, choose “Danish” from the “Choose Language…” drop-down. There is a misconception that lifestyle design is just for entrepreneurs or CEOs. In reality, the principles — borrowed from economics and behavioral psychology — can be applied within organizations and groups with even more dramatic effects. Just watch the 25-minute segment above from the Danish equivalent of the BBC (DR1), where lifestyle design is tested by both an employee at insurance giant Codan and ...

Yes Tim. Yes Tim. Yes! This quote:If the processes are wasteful (inefficient), performance will decrease when you attempt to scale. The more people involved, the more severe the decrease. If the processes–including prioritization and workflow optimization–are lean (efficient), performance will increase. Combined with other people following the same lean processes, performance can increase in an exponential vs. linear fashion (For any exponentially growing quantity, the larger the quantity gets, the faster it grows)." says it all. It's tough to remain focused on this "process awareness" in the early stages of business. Doing so reaps benefits later. It's that darned delayed gratification deal !

I confess. I like using it that way. I think architecting something is different from designing it. I hope you can forgive me but I think it's a more precise way to express this idea. Design carries a lot of baggage related to aesthetics. We say something is well-designed if it looks good. There are great designs that don't look good, certainly, but it's really easy to get caught up in a bauhaus, white space, ...
