During November 2008 Martin Kearn and Pete Reid worked on a session at the TechEd 2008 conference in Barcelona entitled "SharePoint Ports, Protocols and Proxies. An end-to-end overview of SharePoint inter-server communication" (OFC402). The slides from the TechEd presentation can be found here, these include more detail than is presented in this article. The session talked in great detail about how the various servers in the SharePoint farm communicate with each other and this article ...

We just started a brand new year that will surely be very exciting. Looking into my crystal ball, here are a few predictions for 2009. ASP.NET is deadYou should drop ASP.NET and start using Silverlight right now because it is clear that Microsoft has no roadmap and future plans for that technology. At the last PDC, nothing new ASP.NET was announced except a few tweaks for AJAX and the fact that Microsoft released the MVC ...

I got this question when teaching a class about architecting Document and Records Management solutions with SharePoint - is it possible to store the documents outside of the SQL database and the metadata within SharePoint? Yes, this is possible - take a look at the External storage option for Binary Large Objects (BLOBS) in Windows SharePoint Services and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. However, there are some reasons to stay away from it - at ...

By now, you’ve probably read about the demise of Journalspace. For those that haven’t an entire blogging service with an Alexa page rank of 106,881 has been wiped out (allegedly) by a disgruntled, malicious employee. It turns out that their content was stored in a single database on a RAID1 array and wasn’t backed up. It gave me the nudge I needed to perform a recovery from tape test and I’m happy to say it ...

Yep. RAID is not Disaster Recovery for your data, it makes it highly available. RAID should be a part of making your system resistant to failures of all shapes and sizes, but it just isn't going to stand up on its own.

iPhone/iPod touch only: If recession budgeting meant choosing an iPhone/iPod touch over a Kindle when the dust cleared this holiday season, you're in luck: Stanza is a free and fantastic ebook reader for your iPhone. The free application comes pre-loaded with several sources for downloading free or public domain books (including the entire Project Gutenberg library), so you can easily download books like The Art of War, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, or Walden ...

I've been using Stanza for months now, and have probably read over a dozen full length novels on it. Definitely the best ebook option for the iPhone currently available. I'm hoping to see a little more refinement & polish in future versions, but as a free app it can't be beat.
