A number of people whose opinions I greatly respect have turned me on to Yelp over the last six months or so. Yelp is a community review site, and a great way to discover cool new places in whatever neighborhood you happen to be in. I've enjoyed using Yelp, and I wanted to participate by submitting my first review, so I created a new account there. As part of the account creation process, I was ...

Someone with some spare 20% time at Google should work on some sort of public address book API for GMail. I would imagine Google would do this at some point with all their recent focus on social networking frameworks.

Something to think about. All these sites say they're not going to do something terrible w/ your pwd, but the simple fact that you're using it somewhere other than the site that needs it to authenticate you puts it and your account at risk

A couple of similarly troubling items, giving the proliferating of phishing attacks: E*Trade will frequently send out legitimate account info from a *completely different domain name* than etrade.com. And Network Solutions, of ALL PEOPLE, will send out domain update notices and domain management info sometimes from an awfully phishy-looking domain. I called them and asked them about it long ago, and sure enough, it's one of their domains. But why why why would you want to TRAIN users to EVER trust anything that didn't come from your main, trusted domain? It's like doing the phishers' prep work FOR them. Insane.

All the big three (Google, Yahoo, Windows Live) have public Contact APIs so any site that's still asking for your email account password should crawl back to that cave nobody wants to visit.

Why don't they just allow an address book upload?

I couldn't agree more. I never give out my email password to 3rd party sites, but I suspect that many people do - without thinking twice about it.

I agree fully. At one point facebook did the same thing and I said a big fat negative. I'm not the most security focused person but my email I like to keep private....

yep. spot on. the sites might want to let you paste a list of contacts in or something like that, but they definately shouldn't ask for your password.Bad site, Bad. No biscuit.

I don't give my email passwords to anyone. Why should I give them to a company, that I just know. And why should I give them access to my addressbook. I admit this is a solution that works. But there should be a better way than to give this information through the front door.

As much as I agree, until APIs proliferate (thanks Yahoo! and Gmail), this is how it's gonna be. I just hope people don't get too used to this.

Have you ever wanted to share something that you were reading, but you didn't want to go through the hassle of subscribing to a whole feed for a single interesting article? And what about sharing content from sites with no feeds? There you are, reading along, and you think to yourself, "If only everything on the web had a 'Share' button like in Google Reader!" As it turns out, there's all sorts of information "out ...

Google's new sharing with notes is very interesting, but still only a one-way communication. I'd love to see this developed into a two-way conversation about what is being shared. It's a step in the right direction, though.

Man, I recently started using FriendFeed because of their annotation support. And because of their support to annotate any Web page! Just thanks to the addition of a little bookmarklet to my browser toolbar... I like convergence, but I'm a little bit disappointed because this "Share with note" feature is like a straight copy...Is it possible it was known from the beginning that the FriendFeed worthy's innovations will find their way directly to Google?

This is interesting. Looks like another attempt of Google's to completely unify all their various social aspects.
The problem I'm having with Google currently isn't the level of quality their services provide. It's the complete lack of design unification their products show. Their stuff may be simplistic-looking, but it's almost all ugly. That's a problem for me.
