Blogging for all intents and purposes has been around for about the ten year mark. During that time it has gone through many changes as more platforms and tools became available that made it easier and easier for just about anyone to become a blogger. Styles of blogs have grown as well with everything from the original personal weblog style right through to today’s political blogs, tech blogs, and one of the hottest niches around ...

Looking for funding for the next hot Facebook application? You aren’t going to find it. So claims Nicholas Carlson who quotes an executive at one of the Facebook application firms as saying “It would be insane for a new developer” to begin creating new apps on the platform. This exact same issue was brought up at Graphing Social Patterns East back in June when one of the large developers suggested that somebody ask Facebook how ...

Traffic analytics company Hitwise released search market share numbers for dating websites in June today and two things were striking about the data. Ad supported free site PlentyOfFish is trouncing everyone in the dating game and huge numbers of mainstream users are still afraid to navigate there directly using their browser's address bar. The economics of user ignorance are serious and could have big implications for online innovation. More than 10% of the searches for ...

Isn't it more likely that these users don't even have a search bar? They are most likely IE users regardless, so it make sense that they don't have an embedded search bar.

Earlier this week, Delta Airlines announced plans that will turn the boarding passes into advertising opportunities, or billboards, hawking destination specific businesses and products. An Omaha-based start-up, Sojern is behind this advertising offer, which is going to be adopted by four airlines in addition to Delta - American, Continental, United, and US Airways. Given that airlines are in such desperate position, mostly because of their incompetency, they are ready to try anything, however strange it ...

Danish startup Zendesk is a SaaS delivered help desk solution that provides a backend service for small to medium sized help desks. It's been designed from the ground up as a pure play help desk solution and so it has features specifically for this use. Like other SaaS offerings, Zendesk offers significant cost savings when compared to its more traditional installed competitors. Zendesk is remarkably easy to set up. Being SaaS based there is no ...

SocialMedia, a San Francisco company that places ads on social networks and other areas where there’s a social component for advertisers to tap, has hired Savvian investment bank to raise what could be a $20 million second round, we’re hearing. I wrote about SocialMedia last month, and described the evolution of its offerings including its new FriendRank technology to help place socially relevant ads. Apparently, so much interest from venture capitalists has since hit the ...

About 10 years ago, I helped create a web service called Company Sleuth. The basic premise was that as a company conducted its business activities, it would leave a "paper trail" online. And Company Sleuth tried to find that trail by automatically searching a variety of public databases (such as the US patent database, trademark database, domain registrations, job listings, etc.) for "clues" about all US public companies activities. Users would tell Company Sleuth the ...

NPR today is making available to the public an API that allows anyone to “mash-up, re-use, and otherwise build upon” content created by the national radio network. The idea for the wide release of the API is to increase the spread of its digital material, and thus its legitimacy. So far, the public has only seen such material, be it text or audio or images, made available through its website and those of affiliate stations. ...

How do you know when one of the world’s most respected investment firms has veered off path and bet wrong? That’s the crux of the question raised by a piece in this month’s Fortune entitled “Kleiner bets the farm” that puts Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers under the lens for its recent investment decisions. The firm’s fortunes have emerged as the subject of discussion in Silicon Valley, now that the firm has largely abandoned the ...
