At the Beijing Olympics, there were thousands of photographers all looking to get iconic shots of the games. For some events, that meant arriving many, many hours early and setting up elaborate remote camera setups. For the men's 100m dash, there were close to 100 remote cameras set up, all focused on the same thing: the finish line. Photographer Vincent Laforet was there, and he made this amazing video showing the sheer insanity of hundreds ...

Forget "pretend" black holes in optical cables: astronomers at MIT have taken the highest-ever resolution imagery of the region of space near the giant black hole at the center of our galaxy, as shown in this image. In fact, the bright spot in the center is what they were looking at: it's a funky space-object dubbed SgrA* which may be a fiery disc of matter spinning round outside the event horizon. Normally dust clouds between ...

We've seem our share of good packaging ideas and bad packaging ideas, but this new method from HP is a great packaging idea. Their Pavilion dv692 systems available at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club will sit on the shelf in their own recycled material messenger bags, stabilized and protected with internal air bubbles. This alternative to huge boxes shoved full of styrofoam has reduced HP's individual consumer packaging by an outrageous 97%. And since three of ...

When you're going to buy a USB thumb drive, there's not much differentiating all the brands other than looks. Usually, people just grab the cheapest or the least stupid-looking. That won't be the case when PNY unleashes it's newest 2GB drive. Why? It'll come preloaded with Ghostbusters, that's why. Ghostbusters! There's no word on the pricing or what format the movie comes in, but if it's priced similarly to other 2GB drives, those other drives ...

So, are you enjoying the snappy, clean performance of Google Chrome since downloading yesterday? If so, you might want to take a closer peek at the end user license agreement you didn't pay any attention to when downloading and installing it. Because according to what you agreed to, Google owns everything you publish and create while using Chrome. Ah-whaaa? Here are the juicy bits in question: 11. Content license from you 11.1 You retain copyright ...

This EULA is so unreasonable that the state of Washington would throw it out in a second. There's legal precedent here, so I'm not terribly worried about it.

Don't give someone your phone unless you trust them: There is a new electronic capture device that has been developed primarily for law enforcement, surveillance, and intelligence operations that is also available to the public. It is called the Cellular Seizure Investigation Stick, or CSI Stick as a clever acronym. It is manufactured by a company called Paraben, and is a self-contained module about the size of a BIC lighter. It plugs directly into most ...

Great concept from designer Vivien Muller for a modular, Lego-like little bonsai tree with 54 mini photovoltaic panels as leaves to soak up juice from the sun and charge your gadgets. Adapters get tucked away beneath a nice little tray, and your gadgets lay on top, basking in the shade. Vivien can you make this, please? I can't keep a real plant alive worth a damn, but this I think could place in the windowsill ...

I am a photographic opportunist, always on the lookout for new techniques and original angles. The word ‘problem’ doesn’t exist to me. In every technical or creative challenge I see an opportunity to try something new … like making a group shot on the moon. The genius behind the image above is Yvan. I’ve been an admirer of his work for years but I’ve only met him for the first time on our photo party ...

Shot from Edward and Bay street. You know when you take a photo but you think it could have been better? I took this a few years ago but always wanted to try it again with better gear. I have this extremely sharp Zeiss 135mm f1.8 lens only for a few week so I thought it'd be a good opportunity.

No camera? No problem! Suppose you feel like taking a break from your camera, or maybe it’s just a rainy day and you don’t want to go out and risk getting the camera wet. Then you can use your flatbed scanner (assuming you have one) to make very interesting still-life pictures. In this post Kai Virihaur shows you how to get these interesting images using your scanner and everyday objects. Your scanner may have settings ...

Interesting: the solution to one problem causes another. "The rigorous studies clearly show red-light cameras don't work," said lead author Barbara Langland-Orban, professor and chair of health policy and management at the USF College of Public Health. "Instead, they increase crashes and injuries as drivers attempt to abruptly stop at camera intersections." Comprehensive studies from North Carolina, Virginia, and Ontario have all reported cameras are associated with increases in crashes. The study by the Virginia ...
