If information is the currency of democracy, as Thomas Jefferson allegedly said, then during last Thursday's vice-presidential debate between Senator Biden and Governor Palin a lot of people used Google Search to get a bit wealthier, metaphorically speaking. Using Google Hot Trends, we can see some of the more interesting things that people were researching, and you can do the same to follow along yourself during tomorrow night's second presidential debate (9 PM ET). But ...

Last week, I mentioned the Slife review I wrote for MacSparky. If you haven’t read that, I hope you will, because I want to talk a little bit more about how Slife has been helpful for me. The short version is this: “Slife is a free program that runs in the background and measures how you spend your time. After it has been running for a while, you can go back and evaluate what you’ve ...

The big winner this year appears to be Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner, who received the biggest bonus and salary award. But all the top executives at Microsoft received raises and higher bonuses in fiscal 2008 than in fiscal 2007. The pay is apparently weighted to favor earnings performance over stock price gains, since MSFT was a snooze over that period. Here's the pay chart, from a proxy filing:

The music industry is struggling to gain a foot-hold in the battle with online piracy. The options available for music lovers to grow their music collection digitally is tremendous and free. So much so that music companies and publishers have struck up agreements with some of biggest names offering digital music: iTunes, Last.FM., Amazon, Myspace, and Wal-Mart. While the options are appreciated, a certain restriction that comes with the music files is not. To help ...

While Muxtape's Justin Ouellette just posted a dire story about the shutdown of the popular mixtape service and his dealings with the music industry, Favtape has updated its service dramatically. Muxtape will effectively remain closed for the general public and will only return as a music hosting service for bands. Favtape, on the other hand, now looks like Muxtape on steroids, with embeddable playlists, album art, integrated YouTube search, a shuffle mode, and the ability ...

Earlier today, Democratic and Republican leaders in Congress announced that they had reached a “fundamental agreement” on a government bailout of the nation’s financial system. But following a meeting at the White House this afternoon, which included Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Barack Obama (D-IL), there are “fears the Wall Street bailout deal is falling apart.” In an interview with CNN this evening, Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-CT) said the meeting became “contentious” ...

Yeah, sure buddy Looks like McCain showed up to the President's "let's all agree on a bad bill" meeting and started talking about his own bill, with House Republicans. Apparently this bill involves more deregulation to fix the problem. (No, I'm not kidding. This is clearly some sort of pathology) So by the end of Bush's photo op, the bill was lying in pieces on the floor. I'm glad to see that John McCain's intervention ...

Google's search advertising is the best cash cow ever invented for the Internet. None of the well funded alternative search engine contenders are able to put a dent into that dominance. But all of Google's other experimentation, all that frenzied innovation from their assembled brains trust, seems to be hitting headwinds. A tiny Indian company called Zoho is giving them a run for their money in Web Office and the latest report indicates that Knol ...

Many Web 2.0 companies have tried to make money by charging for their product, but it can be hard work - especially if the product started out as free. Jott, a voice to text transcription service, is an example of one that took the plunge and succeeded. Jott moved to a paid model following a successful free beta. I spoke with Jott CEO John Pollard to learn how they did it and how it is ...

The upgrade itself is less than $4 so I suspect many people will go for it. Jott has a variety of plans to choose from including free, basic, pro, pay-as-you-go, etc.

A few weeks ago Google released the beta of Google Chrome, a new Web browser based on WebKit. Since then there has been a lot of interesting hype and backlash against the hype about Chrome. Two great examples of the hype and the corresponding backlash are Mike Arrington's Meet Chrome, Google’s Windows Killer and Ted Dziuba's article Chrome-fed Googasm bares tech pundit futility in response. The best way to think about Google Chrome is to ...

The AP's Nedra Pickler credulously reports the McCain campaign's claims to be outraged that Barack Obama used the expression "lipstick on a pig": Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama told an audience Tuesday that GOP presidential nominee John McCain says he'll change Washington, but he's just like President Bush. "You can put lipstick on a pig," he said to an outbreak of laughter, shouts and raucous applause from his audience, clearly drawing a connection to Palin's ...

Are you one of the many executives who'd love to leave the corporate battleship to skipper a speedy, nimble start-up? And are you using a variety of rationales for why it's not yet time to go? Reasons such as: I need to work on my résumé, acquire more credibility, learn to manage better, figure out how financing really works, maintain stability at home while my children are young? Those are legit reasons, of course, but ...
