Barack Obama's tax plan, laid out by advisers Austan Goolsbee and Jason Furman in the Wall Street Journal in mid-August, promises to improve the nation's fiscal standing by scaling back tax cuts for people making more than $250,000. Since then, the business pundit class has been griping that people who make $250,000 a year aren't really wealthy, especially if they live in and around New York; San Francisco; or Washington, D.C. What would you do if you only had a month left to hear? With a disease that put tumors on her brain stem, Jessica Stone was given a month to savor the sounds in her world before surgery took away her hearing for good. Her story ran on Good Morning America. I first read her story on the fan boards for her favorite artist, Matt Nathanson. Warning: if the internet hasn't broken your soul, this ...

"There are half a dozen [economic] issues today, each one of which is as important as the most important issue at the beginning of most presidential terms." Larry Summers became so well-known during his brief and contentious tenure as President of Harvard that it's easy to forget about his real job, as a much-lauded academic economist with a history of real-world service at the World Bank and in the Clinton Administration. In this month's Harvard ...

Security guards contracted by the DHS threw a woman out of a Social Security office in Van Nuys for wearing a t-shirt that read "lesbian.com." He claimed that "The Rules and Regulations Governing Conduct on Federal Property" gave him the right to throw her out for wearing a t-shirt with the word "lesbian" on it. As she headed for a line to pick up a Social Security card for her son, Gilbert was stopped by ...

Whenever somebody drops the term “per se” into a blanket statement to mitigate his/her own extreme view on any issue, that person is undoubtedly lying. Example: “I’m not advocating man-on-donkey sex per se, but I do think our sodomy laws are too restrictive.”

When the Distilled Spirits Council threw its blowout bash Monday in downtown Denver, lobbyists from places like Daimler, Amgen, and Lockheed Martin mingled with politicians. Never mind that Congress passed a law in 2007 cutting back on comingling. The distillers found a loophole: By distributing literature on underage drinking, the party qualified as "educational" and was therefore legit.[more ...]

A North Korean propaganda release claims that the hunger-stricken country has developed a "hunger-delaying" soy-protein noodle that doesn't induce the same carb-based hunger pangs that starch-based noodles cause: According to the newspaper, which is seen as closely linked to the Pyongyang leadership, the new noodles have twice as much protein and fives times as much fat as ordinary noodles. "When you consume ordinary noodles (made from wheat or corn), you may soon feel your stomach ...

I don’t have parties very often; it takes a major event in my life before I throw open the doors to more than a few people. That’s why a group of my foodie friends were surprised to get an invitation to a last minute gathering at my house a few weeks ago. Even more surprising, was what a strange party it became. I always try to be a good host with lots of things to ...

Even as I.O.U.S.A, a documentary looking at the United States' $53T national debt, is to be shown at both the Democratic and Republican conventions, economists are beginning to openly discuss the previously unthinkable - should America should default on some or perhaps all it's obligations? Although some argue a sovereign default by the United States would not be the end of the world, with political fallout more severe than financial, most overlook the obvious: America ...
